    Artist History
His recording history for the label began in 1993 with “Incineration”, an epic blast of noise and emotion, which he followed the next year with “Static Burn”, an equally powerful exorcism-by-fire. Both releases were presented as limited edition packages that subsequently sold out. Another limited edition, “Furious Eclipse”, a 12 inch single released in 1995, marked the beginning of a gradual move towards more subtle sound constructions. Just as these pure sounds were beginning to emerge in his live shows, audiences outside of Northwest began getting their first exposure to his relentless performances. Starting in Japan, and in later France, Germany and Sweden, Daniel won over new converts to his music. 1997 has been another busy year, starting off with his CD for Side Effects and concluding with this release and a return to France for a short series of performances and workshops with the Grateful Dead.

Moving on from the oppressive atmospheres created on his last album, “Screaming Caress” (Side Effects DFX 23), Daniel Menche has brought a new esthetic to bear, one that evokes more of David Lynch’s “Eraserhead” soundtrack than any obvious or common sort of brutal noise assault. It’s a direction that he’s been moving in recently, and after working on this project for the last two years he’s crafted an intricate and profound recording that confirms his originality and solidifies his position as one of America’s most inventive and original soundcrafters. The atmosphere of “Field of Skin” is one of solitary isolation in a dark cell, somewhere deep inside an overwhelmingly huge ship, where all the common sounds of human life have vanished and the background hum found in such places becomes the central focus. With this release Daniel has taken the ideas of minimalism and atmosphere that provided the foundation for “Screaming Caress” and fully exposed them. As with every album released previously, all of the sounds used come from accoustic and somatic (of the body) sources.
