Always known for avoiding trends and following our own plans, CERAFIM has survived the fads of today's pop music by playing creative, dynamic, conceptual pieces, accentuated by "straight ahead" and complex arrangements. Our music is performed with honest passion and a high level of musicianship. For those of you who are lured to the power of modern progressive rock - we salute you. For those of you who defy the latest craze, fads and trends of today's "pre-fabricated" music - we will provide you with our musical alternative. We like to call our music a "sound for sore ears". Artist History January 2003: CERAFIM signs a distribution/licensing deal with the newly formed label, ProgRock Records. CERAFIM named as one of the artists to record on the upcoming SAGA tribute CD in 2003 as part of SAGA's 25th anniversary. A new CD titled "News From The Edge Of The Universe" is released, a collection of songs recorded from 1987 to 1996. January 2002: The new "Revelation" CD is now distributed and manufactured through Fossil Records www.fossilrecords.net in the United States. Discussions with additional independent record companies are in progress. October to December 2001: The new "Revelation" CD is sent to many reviewers and record labels in Canada, United States, Europe and South America. September 2001:  Recording is completed at the CBC Studios and the new "Revelation" project is mixed once again by producer Nick Blagona at his home studio. Produced once again by Nick Blagona, recorded and mixed at Chalet Studios in Claremont, Ontario and mastered by Nick at Metalworks.  February 1999: Oleg Sarkissov becomes the new drummer, replacing Marce Ciurleo.  Marce has decided to spend more time with his family, raise 2 kids and pursue a master carpenter career and if you have ever seen his woodworking skills first hand, you know he has a great talent working with wood. October 1998: Mark Roebuck is the new lead vocalist, replacing Jeff Morrison.  After 12 years singing and performing with Cerafim, Jeff has decided to spend more time with his family, as life on the road, raising 2 kids and running an IT department have become quite demanding. April 1996: CERAFIM releases their debut CD titled, "Sides Of A Different Kind", produced by Nick Blagona, recorded and mixed at Metalwork Studios in Misissauga, Ontario. November 1995: Toronto radio station Q-107 previews the CD on the program "Discovery" hosted by radio personality Al Joynes. A live performance and CD release party at the Horseshoe Tavern follows the same week. June 1995: CERAFIM is selected as a top 15 finalist in the Canadian National Songwriting Competition with the song, "Sides Of A Different Kind" hosted by Toronto radio station The Mix 99.9 April 1995: CERAFIM is one of 12 winners with the song "Colours Of Love" on Hamilton radio station Y95 Classic Rock, featured on their annual "Future Classics" CD compilation release. Completion of recording and mixing of the debut CD at Metalworks Recording Studios. Produced, mixed and mastered by Nick Blagona. BACK to TOP June 1994: CERAFIM is selected as a top 20 Semi-Finalist in Toronto radio station Q-107's annual "Homegrown" amateur talent search contest. June 1993: CERAFIM earns a first place finish in the preliminary finals of the Yamaha Music Quest'93 international talent search contest. July 1992: CERAFIM is selected as a top 20 Semi-Finalist in Toronto radio station Q-107's annual "Homegrown" talent contest. Over 1,000 tapes were submitted from across Canada. October 1991: Initial film shooting of an independent video for the song " What You Want" begins at the Ontario Science Centre. March 1991: Cerafim appears on the TV show, "On Stage" a 30 minute, live taping and broadcast on CKCO-TV, Kitchener, Ontario and put into regular broadcast rotation. Cerafim was one of 12 bands chosen from across Ontario to appear on the show to perform their original music. February 1991: MCTV-Cable 47 video tapes a live performance at Nag's Head North, Markham Ontario for broadcast on Toronto's multi-cultural television station. BACK to TOP November 1990: Winners of the "Labatt's Blue Band Warz" talent contest held in Sudbury Ontario. Cerafim went on to win 2nd place at the Ontario Regional finals held in London, Ontario. January 1990: Winner of the "American Dream Music Festival" held at the Stardust Hotel, Las Vegas. A total of 1500 bands from across the USA had participated in a year long competition to qualify as one of the 10 finalists in Las Vegas. The show was hosted by TV personality Dick Van Patton and a live recording was released in late 1990. October 1989: Winner of the "Canadian Music Challenge" a national competition in association with "Canada Sports, Fitness & Music". Cerafim to represent Canada at the American Dream Music Festival held in Las Vegas, Nevada. February 1989: Cerafim is the opening act for New York rocker, Eddie Money in Cambridge Ontario during his Canadian tour. July 1988: Cerafim opens up the Canada Day celebrations at the Canadian National Exhibition Bandshell and plays an hour long set that is taped and broadcast on CITY-TV and the Global TV networks. April 1988: A top-25 Semi-Finalist in Toronto radio station Q-107's annual "Home Grown" amateur talent contest. A total of 1700 tapes were submitted from across Canada. January 1998: Performs on the Variety Club Telethon, hosted by Monty Hall and broadcast live on the Global Television Network. BACK to TOP September 1987: Live performance at Canada's Wonderland at the International Showplace for the Labour Day festivities and broadcast live on the Global Television Network June 1987: Winner at the "Italian Day" music competition at the Ontario Place Forum with a crowd of 4,000 people, winning both the "best ballad" and "over-all winner" categories. Sponsored by Toronto radio station CHIN 100.7FM , hosted by Johnny Lombardi and released on a live LP recording. I was pleased with what I heard. Our Webmaster here at P4Y gave me this promo disc of 5 songs from the band, which I know is a preview of the forthcoming CD Revelation. If this music is an indication of what’s to come, bring it on guys. What we have is an ambitious new sound then previous work made by the band. With the myriad of heavier guitar sounds that they are forging; this creates a sharper edge to the music. I like the direction the band is going in, but I also like them to take some chances with the music, mix it up, keep the listening audience guessing more about what’s to come. Take it from me music lovers; check out the Cerafim CD Revelation when it’s released. The promo gave me a taste of what’s to come from the band; I can’t wait for the main meal. Fans of Shadow Gallery, Dream Theater, Ice Age and lovers of melodic prog metal will want to check the CD out. I look forward to updating this with a full review once the CD is released. I cannot believe that I have been missing out on this talented band all this time. But now I am making up for lost time by playing the CD every chance I get. The music is just great melodic rock in the same vein as Saga or maybe Toto; but they really do forge a unique sound and style. All the tracks are well produced and well written, what a pleasure for the ear to enjoy. The band is made up of five first class musicians with Marcello Ciurleo on drums and back vocals, John D'Addona on guitar and back vocals, Rick Kazmirchuk on keyboards, percussion, back vocals, Jeff Morrison, lead vocals and Gabe Petho bass guitar and back vocals. As I stated earlier, this is great melodic prog-rock that you will want to play over and over again. The complex music and great melodies will bring you back for more. If you like Asia, Saga, and Genesis when Phil Collins was in control, you'll like Cerafim for sure. Please check them out and the rest of the great artists on Fossil Records at www.fossilrecords.net Rating 7 keyboards _________________________________________ Flash Magazine, December 2001: ITALY Reviewed by Andrea Bertimino CERAFIM "Revelation" Score:80 /100 I received from the Canadian band Cerafim their last five song mini-cd that shows their new artistic dimensions, coming after the excellent debut of 1995 "Sides Of A Different Kind"(an exquisite platter of Prog/AOR) and another 4-track-cd from 1999. The musical style has been modified, opting for an oblique rock that is hard to describe, because the older sound is now influenced by The Police and Peter Gabriel and several other dimensions. From this point of view, the hypnotic rhythms of "Desert of My Heart" and the pop/rock of "Hurricane" represent a break with the past (that lives in the very professional arrangements) and "Hurricane" will please the fans of Peter Gabriel, although the contest here is harder then the ex voice of Genesis is used to offering. On the other side "Revelation" and "Our Love" are on the more traditional path (only a little rougher) with a great job by John D'Addona (guitar), Rick Kazmirchuk (keyboards), Gabe Petho (bass) and Oleg Sarkissov (drums) that help to make the listening very interesting. Even if the names of the writers are not signed, I'm sure that "I Believe" has been written by the 'old guard', with that perfect balance of AOR, prog and pomp rock, but the more aggressive style of the singer gives it a more bloody result. I keep listening to "Sides Of A Different Kind" (1995), but "Revelation" witnesses the choice to face new adventures, with risks different from the well known ones, but we must respect it. A greater cure to the sound and a few touches here and there to the songwriting (but don't forget that in the past you released a great album) are the things I have to tell them, there are great expectations on you!! Back to top ________________________________________ Strutter'Zine: The Netherlands November 2001 Gabor Kleinbloesem, Editor, Strutter'zine REVELATION-CERAFIM (DEMO CDR) I reviewed the debut CD of the Canadian band CERAFIM sometime ago, and now they sent me a great new CDR with 5 songs. The band has a new singer and while musically they sound better now, they seem to have moved into a Melodic Rock direction without losing the progressive rock influences. Opener "Desert of My Heart" for example is a great high-quality semi melodic rocker like a mix between TYKETTO, VALENTINE and TESLA, but with a very melodic almost AOR type chorus. The following two songs are quite different, as "Hurricane" and "Revelation" are both great progressive rockers (like RUSH and SAGA). It's all quality on this CDR, because the 2 last tracks are also pretty good. "Our Love" is a nice 70's type progressive melodic rocker, while the closing track "I Believe" is a good progressive melodic hard rock song. The band has mixed up a lot of influences this time (happily good styles) the band's new singer has a very powerful voice (Melodic Hard rock voice), so this all combined makes the new sound of CERAFIM attractive to lots of music lovers. POWERPLAY MAGAZINE ISSUE 30 JANUARY 2002 United Kingdom Reviewer: Robbie Evans Cerafim sent me their debut CD "Sides Of A Different Kind" last year. The band's sound is like a glorious amalgamation of Saga, Shotgun Symphony and Asia, sounds good doesn't it ? Well let me tell you it certainly is. The whole sound has been captured by seasoned producer Nick Blagona who has worked with the likes of Deep Purple amongst others. There are a lot of progressive influences on display as well as a few pomp elements which certainly makes this a very interesting and diverse CD. They also recorded a new four track demo that they also sent me last year with a lot of the progressive elements having now been dropped leaving us with a band that now has that perfect combination that all the classic AOR bands have, dynamic choruses coupled with pomp drenched keys and explosive guitars that are never intrusive but appear in all the right places. As I said that was last year and this year the band has recorded their new five track demo called "Revelation". After repeated plays of this demo it appears that the band have gone back to the sound and style that they had on their debut CD only with a bit more punch in the guitar dept. They also seem to have dropped a lot of the keyboards that were prevalent on their past releases (dropping keyboards is never a good thing in my book). With the keyboards taking a back seat it's the turn of guitarist John D'Addona to shine as he does on the likes of "Revelation" and "I Believe" giving the songs plenty of balls. I also think that vocalist Dexter Edwards lacks the colour and versatility that his predecessors had and sounds like a man who is having difficulty coming to terms with the songs on the demo and he seems to suit the likes of "Hurricane" best. However saying that they are still one of Canada's best unsigned bands around at the moment as these songs will testify. Vocalist aside Cerafim have all the credentials to go a long way and should appeal to anybody who likes to call themselves a rock fan. "Sides Of A Different Kind" is Cerafim's first album released in 1995, whose eleven songs are an endless surprise and pleasure, even if sometimes they sound dated. "Brave New World" will attract and will raise enthusiasm among the fans of AOR mixed with progressive, while the title track is a great melodic rock like Two Fire (or even better!). The lovers of the instrumental technique will above all be satisfied with the instrumental pyrotechnist "Stress" and "Man of Distinction", between Kansas, Yes and Rush, showing the skill of Marcello Ciurleo (drums), John D'Addona (guitar), Rick Kazmirchuk (keys) and Gabe Petho (bass). The slow "You're Gone Now" is a precious casket of velvety vocal harmonies and refined instrumental parts, with "Colours of Love" and "The Vision" proceeding between CITA and Prophet underlining the pompous side of Cerafim. "Man Made Money" takes again the reins of AOR, but you must listen with what fantasy the arrangements are realized! The band is still alive and sent me a preview of their forthcoming new album and the four songs included confirm that the time did not dim their talent. "Walking Through Fire" is a flaming AOR tune with a great refrain and a huge solo portion. "Angelina", more on the funky side, opens new horizons to Cerafim. "In My Life" is a fantastic ballad with those pompous openings and luxuriant keyboards and "You're The Reason" closes in beauty, a tasty hors d'oeuvre. I would not be astonished if their next movement was released via a clever label, the stuff is there and is plentiful. John Howard, GIG Online, CD Reviews, July '96 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fireworks Magazine, Wales, United Kingdom November 2000 Nicky Baldrian, Editor Here's an interesting and diverse band from Canada who play mostly AOR and Melodic rock, but now and again add in sneaky progressive twists like on the catchy opening track 'Brave New World', 'Man Of Distinction' and 'The Vision'. All feature some great keyboard work from Rick Kazmirchuk which make the songs lie somewhere between Rush and CITA. The next couple of tracks are even better as 'Sides Of A Different Kind' is a song very close to Two Fires and Journey and Jeff Morrison's lovely vocal harmonies make the song sound rich and full of melodic bliss which is continued on the subtle ballad 'You're Gone Now' which will remind listeners of Tim Feehan, Journey and Toto. 'Caught In The Middle' and 'Clutches Of Anguish' are weaker songs, but it's on songs like the excellent 'Colours Of Love' and 'Man Made Money' that the band's true AOR side comes back into view, both these two tracks are superb which I know fans of the aforementioned bands will love. Another great song is the excellent 'In The Line Of Fire' which sounds very similar to Whitesnake's 'Crying In The Rain' and is a great song. The album ends with a jazzy progressive instrumental piece called 'Stress', overall this album which was originally released in 1995 is produced well and is a very entertaining and diverse, offering plenty of musical choice to fans of both AOR and progressive rock. The band recently sent me a new batch of songs which were recorded earlier this year. These new songs continue the standards set on 'Sides Of A Different Kind', the first song 'Walking Through The Fire' is a brilliant song a'la Honeymoon Suite circa 'Monster Under The Bed', the keyboards are very pompy and the song is easy to get into and is one of my favourite songs of Cerafim. Next track 'Angelina' breaks the moods and comes over experimental, the song has a seventies vibe a'la Rush with a funky Stevie Salas inspired guitar influence. 'In My Life' killed me, now this song is truly wonderful, a jaw dropping piano lead intro builds into wonderful vocal harmonies and is a stunning up-tempo ballad reminding me of Honeymoon Suite and Mystery. I also enjoyed the last song 'You're The Reason', this song enters Kevin Chalfant territory and reminds me of Two Fires, The Storm and also Hugo and is the best song of Cerafim and features a wonderful chorus. Cerafim is a great band with potential, sometimes they can sound a little dated on the more progressive songs, but it's the AOR melodic rockers and ballads where the band scores higher points and should concentrate their art in the future. When it comes to good music, it really doesn't matter what genre the music hails from. Good music is good music. That is what you will get from Cerafim. Both of their CD's are packed full of well written and well produced songs that have more to offer the listener than simply a release. The music is refreshing to hear, especially in a decade of boring songs and unsophisticated musicianship. Defying all trends, Cerafim has set out to conquer the world the only way they know how, their way! With a collection of CD's like this, you can bet that task won't be too difficult. The music is very well presented by the powerhouse vocals of Mark Roebuck. The songwriting skills of this band is masterful and combines for a great mix of songs that you can never get tired of hearing. These angelic rockers may remind you of bands like REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Toto, and Rush. The music that they create stems from the days when these bands ruled the airways. Here in the new millennium, it is refreshing to hear such quality music as is presented on these two CD's. The CD 'Sides Of A Different Kind' is a full length album that is packed full of that great power rock sound that moves your soul into a peaceful state of bliss. The progressive rock sound that this band is not unlike bands like Dream Theater deliver. Cerafim can lift you up with powerful rock songs and bring you down with amazingly smooth, soulful songs. This is definitely a band that I would like to hear more of. I expect to be hearing a buzz about this band moving throughout the US and Canada soon. Anyone who can rock like these guys, deserves all of the glory that comes with it. Back to top -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reviewer: Ed Kruijskamp When I was surfing on the Internet lately, I picked up a few tunes of this Canadian band. After a few listens they really had my attention, so I decided to check things out, send the band an e-mail and asked them if they could send me some promo material... Two weeks later I received the above mentioned album plus a four track CD-R with some new songs. The reason why I decided to review an album from 1995 on this page was two headed. First, I had never heard of the band and their album, but in my opinion they deserve to be mentioned; second, the new songs were so impressive, that I could not reveal this from you lot. Back to the beginning now, this band plays pomp rock with not only AOR but also light progressive influences. They remind of bands like Saga, Roadmaster, Styx, Kansas, Trillion, Rush and even Toto. The album holds 11 tracks and in spite of the fact that it's an independent release, the production sounds great, which is no surprise to me, because all credits for this go to Nick Blagona, who is a famous name in the Canadian music business. Back to top -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SIDES OF A DIFFERENT KIND-CERAFIM CERAFIM is a Canadian band and their debut 'Sides Of A Different Kind' was released way back in 1995, but it still interesting to pick up. Musically they are playing an interesting mixture of AOR, Pomprock and Progressive Rock. I would like to compare this band to their fellow countrymen of MYSTERY who also play this mixture. There are 11 songs on their CD and it all sounds pretty good and very professional indeed. Opener "Brave New World" is slightly progressive, but still great 80s typed AOR with really cool keys and harmonies. The song reminds me of a mixture between SHY TALK and STYX (a really unique description). Anyway, next up is the title song of the CD that is a really great semi Progressive AOR tune. "Man of Distinction" follows, but is a bit too progressive for me. The CD continues with "You're Gone Now". This very relaxing AOR ballad (a la JOURNEY) features really wonderful lead vocals by singer Jeff Morrison who is stealing the show a lot of times on this CD. After the progressive AOR tune "Caught In The Middle", we get to hear a pure Pomp rocker in the shape of "Colours of Love", a song that reminds me of the old records of bands like STYX and KANSAS. The following three songs are very much Progressive Rock orientated, not bad at all, but I prefer a more AOR/Pomprock approach. Nevertheless, the CD has one more Classy 80s AOR tune, namely the song "Man Made Money". This is a great tune that sounds like DAKOTA. The CD closes with the progressive instrumental "Stress". In general, this CD contains a bunch of wonderful AOR/Pomp songs, but there are also lots of Progressive elements to be heard. I would recommend this record to people who like the Canadian MYSTERY, but also if you like Proggy Pomp from the 70s (bands like HUSH, SUNBLIND LION, LION). The story isn't over yet, because the band also sent me a CDR with 4 new tunes and I was totally stunned when I heard them. This demo CDR contains some wonderful pure AOR material and actually sounds much better than their debut CD from 1995. The band really has made a change in style and turned AOR. The progressive rock influences are hard to find on these 4 new songs and I am really glad, because they sound now like some sort of sensational classy AOR band. The first song on the CDR is called "Walking Through Fire", superb classy 80s up tempo AOR/Pomp with a lovely chorus and great keys. This song is definitely the best CERAFIM song and pure AOR that would not fall out of place between JOURNEY, FRONTLINE and ARTICA. Anyway, next up is "Angelina", a weaker song unfortunately, still nice groovier pop rock. The other two songs on the demo CDR are again classy 80s AOR. The songs are titled "In My Life" and "You're The Reason", two wonderful semi AOR ballads with super melodic vocals and harmonies, kind of like JOURNEY meets SAVANNAH. I am really looking forward to hear a new CD of these guys, because it may be a very sensational record. Keep your eye on CERAFIM! "Sides Of A Different Kind", the debut album from the Canadian band Cerafim, is an album like that. Eleven tracks that range from soft to prog pop with a sound that is obviously influenced by country-mates Saga. The fact that this band has been around for more than ten years shows off in the band's strong compositions and their cohesive sound. Mix in top producer Nick Blagona (who did albums for Deep Purple, The Police, Chicago, The Tea Party and the list goes on) and this adds up to a killer potion. "Sides" is well balanced. The right amount of ballads and rockers with enough room for guitar, keyboard and bass. And the band even has a VERY GOOD vocalist! Finding a decent vocalist just seems to be the hardest part in the Prog scene these days. Harmony vocals from all the other members even give an extra bit of power to some parts. As for my favorite tracks, I would choose the title track (no. 2), which has a neat piano intro and some nice guitar riff that continues through most of the song and "In the Line of Fire" (no. 9) which has and OK start, but has an outstanding guitar solo. Issue#33 Reviewer: Bruno Vermisse Honest and competitive in its category of adult oriented rock, found mainly of FM stations, CERAFIM has a lovely sound and especially, a wonderful ability to deliver enchanting melodies based on some clever gimmicks. The keyboards of Rick Kazmirchuk are the origin of eleven songs that are on average four minutes and thirty seconds long. Rick Kazmirchuk's compositions have, if we listen carefully, a mix of styles with a dash of Asian sounds, a hint of TOTO and a pinch of Genesis (when Collins was a part of the group) thrown in. What I mean to say is that CERAFIM has an aptitude to create enchanting melodies which merit being heard on the best FM stations. The voice of Jeff Morrison, perfectly adapted and containing various rich tones, leads the group and it must be noted that the guitar sound of John D'Adonna time after time produces a caressing and carefully crafted style. Their CD has been out already for more that two years. This CD will enchant FM fans and even please hared core amateur fans of progressive rock. The CD is a great way to pass the time.
