His private teachers included John McNiel (in jazz performance studies), Thomas Oboe Lee, his father William Thomas McKinley, Malcolm Peyton, George Balch Wilson and William Bolcom. McKinley’s music has been performed widely throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Some performances and commissions include those from the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the SOLI Chamber Music Ensemble, the Stamic Quaratet, and the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Music Society. His music also has been commissioned, performed and recorded by the Warsaw National Philharmonic, the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Czech Nonet. As a jazz-trumpeter, McKinley has performed with his own jazz ensembles in nightclubs and other performance venues in the Boston area. In 1991, McKinley’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano won a prestigious Broadcast Music Inc. Press Reviews
McKinley’s music has been praised by many highly respected performers, composers, conductors, and critics. Regarding McKinley’s music, composer and conductor David Stock has said "his work is of the highest quality, very sophisticated for one so young...his Viola Sonata, especially, is an outstanding achievement." The late Robert Black, conductor of the PRISM orchestra and the New York New Music Ensemble, said, "a musician and a composer far in advance of his years...he is capable of working in a variety of musical styles, and has early on learned to write music that is true to his own heart." Michael Greenberg of the San Antonio Express-News has wrote the following of McKinley’s work: "Elaborate bop-like lines...serpentine lyricism...all unified by an individual sense of form, wit and texture...[a] promising young American." |
