Artist History
Consumed with Consolation was formed by Dave Hennig in the spring of 1999, with the recording of "wash away the rain" as a solo acoustic project. Mark Frias came on board during the fall of 1999, in the role of percussion and occasional vocals. Mark quickly switched to second guitar, and the ball started rolling. A slew of songs were written and discarded. Jay Barker briefly joined the band during the fall/ winter of 2001-2002, adding keyboards to the mix. More songs were written, and a self-titled ep was recorded over Christmas ’01 and released the following spring. With lush strings and pianos, and hints of experimentation, it marked a clear departure from the sparseness of "wash away the rain", but still held on to the melodic, acoustic leanings of it’s predecessor. If only a glimmer, it hinted at what was to come.
Soon after the recording, Jason left the band. Undaunted, and with a new year ahead, Consumed with Consolation embarked on their first tour through eastern Canada, and made some jaunts through northern Ontario. Playing in backyards, bars, basements, coffee shops, community centers, and clubs they were able to reach a broader fan base, and further their appeal.
Constantly aiming for progression, 2002 marked an intensely creative time for the band. More songs were written and discarded as Mark and Dave once again worked as a duo. First, song structures were played with, then, instrumentation was tinkered with. The result was "The Brian Lynn - Boy/Girl CD", which incorporated drum machines, reverse loops, time and tempo changes, and a more lush orchestration. What started out as a sparse folk-grunge outfit, had matured into a fully orchestrated duo that stood comfortably outside of any conventional genres.
As the new year dawned and people were taking notice of Consumed with Consolation’s lush soundscapes, the band decided to broaden their sound even more. Enter Anthony James. Adding more rock and pop to their sound, while still exploring deeper into experimental territories, he plays keyboards, percussion and drums, and has helped the band’s transformation into new and epic directions.
Writing intensely personal songs, while constantly striving to move forward, Consumed with Consolation has embarked on their most creative period yet. Shows are being played, and listeners are being won over. Songs are being written, and Consumed with Consolation is progressing. Always moving forward.
