The acoustic rock of Damir Yakoubov from Russia. Damir's ancestors come from the same area as Genghis Khan, and his songs are infused with a passion and vitality that is rarely found in Western music.Brit-pop from 14-year-olds Zelli. Zoe Green and Kelly Fodey are the two young girls who make up this dynamic duo. From England, their original songs are poppy, bouncy and a lot of fun.As for the ever-popular alternative rock sound, we have Seren. The focus of the band is around stunning singer Lisa, whose amazing vocals run the gamut from soft whispering to loud gutsy singing ala Grace Slick. We can't be forgetting the New Age folk, and David Rowan, who lives in a 17th century house in a small village, provides spiritual lyrics (he's an expert astrologer) with groovy songs. We even go in for rap, but not in the normal way (of course). Charlotte Russell is a high-class woman with an English king in her background. More accustomed to tea parties on the lawns of mansions, she raps away about caddish boyfriends in her fine-china accent.Shannon Brooke has a soft, emotional style of singing, wringing out fragile sounds in a variety of songs from groove-laden tracks to big ballads. Both Shannon and Charlotte are also members of the all-girl band Minx. These women have been featured in all the British papers, and no wonder. With great looks and great songs, like the cool and sexy Bump and Grind Me, they have a ready-made audience.A man who's lived in America and England is Max Whittaker. He's accomplished as a writer and performer of early blues and folk, and has hung with many of the biggest names in the business in his day. If you want to get original, this is it.The Royalists, namely Brit Nicky James and Yank Kent Goodman, had a hit with their tune about the late Princess Diana, called Diana Queen of Hearts. It was written a year before she died by James, who was a legend in the Sixties Swinging London music scene, and Goodman.Dance and techno? We got your dance and techno right here. Spinning the disks is DJ Sir Beavis, who creates songs with the steady thump thump thump beat that makes you want to jump around, jump around. Already a big favorite with the mp3 crowd, he's bound to get bigger. The Buzzers play that good ol' American rock that is hard to pin down. It's not like CCR exactly, but it's not like Green Day either. But when the British hear it, they say "is that American rock?" I dunno.Like your musicians well-lit? The lead singer of Junk and Disorderly, known cryptically as the Drunken Housewife, can only perform when she's three sheets to the wind. However, she just about manages to sing a tune about a subject that's near to all of our hearts, that is, working in an agricultural laboratory (Chicken Lab Blues). The song will definitely put a smile on your face, and the music is - how shall I put this? - as good as the singing (ahem). The Laird of Camster himself also gets a look in. Kent Goodman has been writing a playing music in clubs around the country and around the world. He's in demand as a songwriter and producer, but when he gets a break he writes for himself, too. Steeped in the acoustic rock/psychedelic genre (James Taylor meets late Beatles), his sounds satisfy that certain craving. As you can see, we may not have one kind of act, but you can rest assured that, like the massive rocks of Stonehenge, each has staying power. Celebrate the magic of music with Wessex Records. |
