Artist History
the icy coldness of technology surrounds you every waking moment. it invades your habits. machines become friends. dealing with humans becomes a rare pleasure. you fill out registration cards, give your address to the woman at the grocery checkout, and identify yourself by social security number to the "customer relations" representative on the other end of the phone. you know that trent still hurts, chuck d. continues to fight the power, tricky's hell is always around the corner and dj shadow's midnight is in a very imperfect world. but your existence of worshipping the gods of convenience continues anyway. that’s when your conscience starts to boil, turning into mad storms that rip the mind and tell you to wake up and find the real. the word. the inescapable truth. you find that a couple of normal humans have stopped just short of being sucked into the machine. they know that we’re surrounded by information, and the odds are against us. through secretive transmissions, they give you bits of information that you find unsettling. it was right there in front of you, and crystallized in an instant. it’s not surprising that paul walters (turntables, samplers, and sequencers) and jeff smerdel (guitar, bass, samplers, sequencers) comprise undernourished. starting back in '92, they've always been proponents of strong artistic statements, and have a reputation for crafting potent sonic manifestos. manifestos in the form of music. music that encompasses an eerily beautiful hybrid of electronic textures and traditional instruments. their result is a distinct sound that transcends a gamut of styles and complexities. one of the spontaneous variables in undernourished comes from their contributing vocalists. representing a range of vocal stylings, these confidants of the duo are invited to add their own writing and performance skills to personalized tracks. they write lyrics from their own interpretation of the truths that undernourished communicate. walters and smerdel then apply the vocalized talents of their trusted friends to their own aural creations. but, these two normal humans have done this before. they were the production unit for R.H.Y.T.H.M., a politically charged rap group based in central indiana from 1991 through 1995. with lead vocalist sean agnew, the group performed with some of the most prominent acts of the era. from several performances with public enemy, to opening for de la soul, to playing the 1993 black radio exclusive with 2pac, the group maintained a high profile and working relationship with a slew of artists. R.H.Y.T.H.M. played throughout the eastern united states at venues including deer creek amphitheater, the vogue, and the patio in indianapolis; the 9:30 club in washington, d.c; and the phoenix club in atlanta. they played several industry showcases including the black radio exclusive in washington d.c., crossroads in memphis, and CAMMS in indianapolis. now, walters and smerdel have reconstituted themselves as undernourished, starting anew with no limitations of style or direction. they have recently finished their debut cd, “manipulated,” and continue to work on new projects, including remixes for other artists including sutur, mrp, grissel, and darin patrick. undernourished are currently performing live, and promise an experience that is truly unique for the audience. appearances so far include a W.I.U.S. live radio broadcast, second story, and rhino’s in bloomington, indiana; the emerson theater, radio radio, the patio, and the ritz, in indianapolis, indiana, and several more shows in the future. the inescapable truth is out and undernourished are on the case. stay tuned. undernourished's new cd, "manipulated", and fan club information is available now at www.elementalmedia.net. |
