Artist description
Samba Traore is the sole musician. He plays the 6 stringed hunters "harp" and sings songs with deep meaning and simplicity in his native language of Bamana. The Donso Ngoni is a hunter's instrument that holds many secrets for its people. All songs were recorded during a two month journey in West Africa. I was there studying the culture, language, and music of the Bamana people. This was not through a university. I went there on a personal journey. Samba Traore is a master ngoni player with great knowledge and depth. He is also a kind, humble, and funny person. He will always hold a special place in my heart. He is very poor and has a large family to support. The money from this CD will help Samba, his wife, and children. All song descriptions are very general because Samba's original language is Bamana and he told me the meaning of the songs in French. The problem was doubled by the fact that French was my second language. I tried to capture the essence of the song meanings as best I could. |
