    Artist History
Formed in late 1998, Pure Fiction began as a Boston area quartet featuring guitarist Scott Lerner, drummer Scott Maher, bassist Josh Miller, and vocalist Jac-Lyn Turilli. With a sound that owed inspirational debts to groups as musically varied as The Pixies, The Replacements, and Janes Addiction. Vocally, Turilli has been compared to Tanya Donelly and Delores O'Riordan. The band's beginning's lay in the collaboration between former Delta Clutch Member Lerner and talented newcomer Turilli. Enlisting Maher as drummer was the next step in fleshing out the band's musical identity, a process that wasn't complete until the trio hooked up with bassist Miller, whose playing cemented the groove for which they had been searching. The band has recently added Rob Cushing on keys and second guitar. Josh Miller left the band in mid-2002 and has been replaced by Mike Rubin. Turilli's voice runs the gamut from high and aching to low and guttural, all the while underpinned with an emotional depth that can't help but draw in the listener. Lerner's anti-guitar hero playing blends hook laden melody lines with a fierce chordal attack that calls to mind the ferocity of the young Pete Townshend. The bands sound is rounded out by the rhythm section and marked by the complexities of Maher's funk tinged drumbeats, the driving bass work of Rubin and the pounding yet delicate keyboard work of Rob Cushing. Their first series of CD demos showcased the band's jangle to a jolt pop sound perfectly evidenced in songs like "Everyday" and "Too Afraid to Speak". With their sophisticated pop hooks and inventive song-craft, Pure Fiction demonstrates a modern rock sensibility but avoids the pitfalls of a genre-specific rut. On their newest disc, "Blue October", Pure Fiction continues some of the same themes but, sees the band growing both musically as well as lyrically - "Closer" and "Deep Breath" come readily to mind.Produced, engineered and mixed over 4 days by Matthew Ellard (Tanya Donelly, C-60, Morphine) at Q Division Studios in Somerville Ma. The CD captures more of the energy of the bands live shows and hints at the bands influences while leaving a great deal to the imagination. Pure Fiction released their debut CD/EP "Everyday" in January of 2000, to a limited group and the follow-up "Blue October" January 17th 2001, to a wide audience. Reviews of the newest disc were very favorable with many accolades for the bands live shows - which continues to draw an ever-growing audience. Pure Fiction returned to the studio after a 2 year recording hiatus in August of 2002 to begin recording the follow-up to Blue October at Appleman Studios with Chris Cugini at the helm. The new disc, From All Sides showcases songs with a more defined direction and purpose. Release is scheduled for mid February on Leadbrick Records.

The driving, hard rock edge of Pure Fiction is augmented by the feminine wiles of lead singer Jac-Lyn Turilli on the band's five song sampler Blue October. And although you don't often hear this type of union, in Pure Fiction's case, the contrast sports a surprisingly refreshing outcome. With a voice that resembles No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, Turilli softens the explosive guitar driven arrangements to a dull roar, giving the songs a life of their own. But,that doesn't mean the bands role is any less important than Turilli's. Oddly enough they work in harmony. Scott Lerner's guitar sound is monstrous as bassist Josh Miller and drummer Scott Maher pount out relentless rhythms. As a trio they may be likened to any other bandbut with the addition of Turilli's vibe, Pure Fictionis indeed more real than their name would imply! - Doug Sloan, Metronome Magazine, April 2001 **** - *** Pure Fiction's second EP Blue October is a fine release. Dreaming on a fluffy bed is the lush female vocal of Jac-Lyn Turilli, covered by the silky comforter of Scott Lerner's clean-to-dirty guitars and, the solid oak headboard of a creative rhythm section courtesy of Scott Maher and Josh Miller. Pure Fiction delivers a nice hook as heard on the pretty Cranberries-like "Deep Breath" or the Tanya Donelly-like and clever "Unspoken Thoughts." Songs about Love, fear of it, and other universal themes take about twenty minutes of your time staying fairly consistent throughout, delivering topics far from fiction. Blue October is the impressive result of a four day stint with Matthew Ellard at Q Division. It is also an introduction to Pure Fiction's mid-tempo pop rock. They're not reinventing radio, but they don't need to. Blue October just may be a sample of what's to come, and from the bed they have now, a draping canopy may be on it's way. After all "truth" is stranger than ""fiction" - Einstein, The Noise, May '01 - * - ... A band that has an undeniable gift for making music that has a certain very charming nocturnal beauty. Their sonic platforms evoke a nice midnight indigo sort of hue in the listener's soul - rich and dark and smooth and unique. Jac-Lyn Turilli's vocals are largely responsible for this beauty, but one should not overlook the warm, sustained carpet of distorted guitar that flows through most tracks, as well as the tight, forward-driving drumming. It's the kind of music that is relaxing, yet at the same time very dance-able. This flow that Pure Fiction possess does sometimes sag or drag a bit in the middle of the disc with "Deep Breath." ... Nonetheless, a unique and beautiful sound. -Luke Pyles, NE Perfomer, June 2001
