Press Reviews
Reviews of Mr. Blanding's Dreamhouse - "s/t" CD "The effortless energy, odd-fingered guitar chording, and faux-innocent vocals hiding subtle edges echo the charm of early Blake Babies - the resemblance is assisted by vocalist Grace Sinclair's light, breathy, sometimes astringent voice, eerily similar at times to the young Juliana Hatfield (one of the most unfairly maligned musicians to have emerged in the '90s - but that's another story). The tunes fought their way up for air from a huge pile of CDs in my office - impressive enough for a CD that looked to give me no particular satisfaction (due in no small part to ultra-cheapo promo packaging) - but the fact that these folks are only 17...well, I wouldn't have guessed it." -- The Architectural Dance Society (http://www.uwm.edu/~jenor/reviews.html) "Speaking of precocious, you just had to know that when a (then) all-early-teens local quartet adopted a moniker as charmingly anti-angst as "Mr. Blanding's Dreamhouse" that there was something more going on in their collective attics beyond the typically moody, "let's loot the supermarket again like we did last summer" posturing. Something, uh, truly subversive. Yes. At any rate, this here Dreamhouse- now long past the spirited noise-making phase- is a flat-out marvel. Rooted roughly in the punk/grunge ethos exemplified by Nirvana's breakout period, Mr. Blanding's Dreamhouse incorporates all manner of hip references (from '60's Bay Area psychedelia up to the present) into their punchy, controlled mayhem. Marked throughout by solid, enthusiastic playing, it's teen queen Grace Sinclair's poetic, stream-of-conciousness lyrics and shockingly expressive vocal gymnastics that put this gem over the top. Great rock sound and not a loser in the bunch. Cool band. Very cool record. Look out." -- Jim Musser, Iowa City Press-Citizen Reviews of Mr. Blanding's Dreamhouse - "Ninety-nine Aprils CD "I thought Iowa was only the home of the Field of Dreams baseball diamond, but apparently it is also the home to this female fronted four-piece (say that after a few beers). Are Mr. Blanding's Dreamhouse just another trite indie rock band or should they be heard? The whole record is a pleasure to listen to and it grows on you as every song passes. The pop/indie rock alá Juliana Hatfield is mixed nicely with a darker, more melodic hardcore edge. The album never plays a chord out of place or a melody that is overused. The music has really nice, affecting harmonies which work so well with the sweet, emotive vocals. The cool thing about this album though is the band's sinister side which enables them to catch you out completely, lulling you into a false sense of upbeat pop security and hitting you with hardcore out rocking tunes. The vocals are a fantastic highlight. Juliana Hatfield meets Meaghan Ball. Tuneful, soulful and edgy. They fit the music perfectly. The bass is also excellent, especially on track three, 'He's in the Sky'. Mr. Blanding's Dreamhouse produce catchy, poppy, emotive and just great independent rock music. The band have great composition and power, initially reminiscent of Copper, with slightly more distorted vocals or perhaps a more upbeat Jejune. The music is also occasionally in the vain of Mineral, how awesome is that! One of the better female fronted indie rock bands out there. I imagine Mr. Blanding built his house to this dreamy music. Pure pleasure. -- 4emo.com (www.4emo.com) |
