Artist History
Charlotte jazz/funk musician Scott McCloud had the honor of playing with his band at Madison Square Garden in New York one day before his 30th birthday. The band, which recently changed its name from the Scott McCloud Trio to Hipshack, performed last weekend as part of the New York Independent Film & Video Festival. One of their songs, "Don't Leave Mad, Just Leave!", is featured on the soundtrack of the movie The Bettor Life by Steven Markoff, which was featured at the festival. The song will also be included on the band's soon to be released CD. McCloud and company decided to change their name so they wouldn't be labled as a jazz band; they prefer to be considered an instrumental funk band. For more details, go to www.hipshack.com |

Press Reviews
BEST LOCAL JAZZ ARTIST/GROUP 1999 & 2000: Scott McCloud TrioQuite simply, the man's been on more bills than the name Duke Power, playing everywhere and anywhere. The shocking thing is that he's really good, and a nice guy to boot. Unlike many Queen City blowers, he also has a respect for the past, and it shows in his music. Charlotte's own Joshua Redman. Scott McCloud Trio Tenor Sax, Hammond B3 organ, drums. Nothing else. Sort of like a super-scaled-down Herbie Hancock's Headhunters with Herbie replaced by Joshua Redman, the Scott McCloud Trio indeed have some rock influence, but have thus far managed to avoid the usual fusion (read: flaccid) sound that often comes as a result. Some people tend to overlook an artist like McCloud because he does play so many shows -- often three or more a week. However, consider: probably 300 or so shows in the last three years makes a band awfully tight, and McCloud and Co. probably make a pretty good penny playing music they love. "Smoke 'em if you got 'em," the saying goes, and McCloud does every week. |
