Artist History
First Republic was founded in the fall of 1998 as a way to creatively waste time during lunch hours in high school. Encouragement from early fans lead to a sold-out first show and a coninciding five-song demo CD release in January 1999. The gained morale allowed the bandmates to continue the project, treating it more seriously. After a show on May 5, 1999, Andrew Henderson officially left the band for other projects, and was replaced ten minutes later by his friend Karl Gutowski. After a short summer of 1999 tour across eastern Canada the band used the fall to write new material, recording it between February and July of 2000. They self-released the album in November 2000, and spent most of the winter and spring organizing a tour. In February of 2001, Adam Berry left First Republic for another project, and was replaced by Ted Janik. In May 2001 First Republic drove across the USA to Los Angeles and back to Toronto playing daily shows along the route of their ambitious undertaking. On July 13, 2001, the band played their last show with Geoff Brennan, and started a search for a replacement vocalist. Later that year they entered a creative hiatus, focusing on helping out and recording other artists. The band is now crafting new beats and recording new demos, and planning a release with new roles for existing members being less defined and open for experimentation. |
