THE PRODUCER -- LOST SONGS FROM THE EIGHTIES Locked up in an old abandoned storage space in Van Nuys California were found these lost recordings and a journal from The Producer.Nobody remembers The Producer from Detroit and that’s probably because his master recordings were missing until recently. The Producer himself has been missing since the late eighties. Some say he’s hiding from his creditors and is living somewhere in Europe under an assumed name. Others say that his creditors, and we’re not talking about the reputable kind, have caught up with him and that he’s buried somewhere under the foundation of The Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Producer began his career in early 1983 as an ambitious youth with a passion for music, sweeping floors and wrapping up mic cords at a famous studio in Detroit. The owner of the studio was a veteran writer and producer and a graduate of Motown University. Anyone lucky enough to record in this studio ultimately would stake a claim in the music world. One day, the young Producer was taking out the trash when he came across a demo tape that had been submitted to the studio and subsequently thrown out. The group on the tape was a duo who called themselves Lost Love. There were two cuts on the tape, “Lonesome Lover” and “With You”. Having listened to the tape, the young Producer was immediately impressed. The tape was poorly recorded and the songs were weak, yet the potential in the lead singer’s vocals and his partners knack for melodic development were very evident. The Producer stayed in contact with Lost Love but it would be a year before anymore was done.By late 1983 The Producer began refining his own writing chops. He invited Liz Thomas, a female singer friend, over to his apartment to help him demo his first song, “Inside Me All The Time”. He played the demo for his boss at the studio and this demonstration of his musical talents gained him free access to the studio during down times. Usually this was 3:00am to 6:00 am.In early 1984 The Producer invited Lost Love and a couple session players to the studio to record his new song, “Shadow”. He was so excited by the success of the project that he put his nose to the grindstone and wrote for the rest of the year. During this time Liz Thomas had been sending him lyrical ideas and they continued to collaborating on songs for her own demo with The Producer.Through the course of 1985 The Producer recorded "Valet Boy", "Rainbow" and "More Than I Am" with Liz Thomas. Then he brought Lost Love into the studio to record "Only You Can Do It" and "If You Leave Me" Armed with what he thought was very strong material, The Producer headed to Los Angeles. Utilizing a string of contacts supplied by his boss at the studio. The Producer spent the next 6 months shopping his tapes. After what seemed like endless days and nights of parties, drugs and clubbing on Sunset Boulevard. The producer met a young A&R rep for a major record company. He was offered a letter of intent and ten thousand dollars in seed money for two albums, one with Lost Love and one with Liz Thomas. It was 1986 when The Producer returned to Detroit with his shiny new deal. Determined to complete the records he immediately began recording again. Burning tape in record speed, he recorded "Cosmopolitan Woman", "Take Your Dreams And Run" and "Lost Love" with Lost Love and "She's A Flirt", "Sizzle And Burn" and "Move To The Sound" with Liz Thomas. Anxious to get back to where he believed the action was, The Producer returned to L.A. with his new recordings.Upon hearing the tapes the president of the record label The Producer was dealing with became very excited and offered a full production contract and a twenty-five thousand dollar advance to complete the albums. Proud of his accomplishment, rather than leaving immediately to Detroit, The Producer decided to stay a little longer in L.A. to celebrate with his new friends. These friends wound up eventually dragging him down. After eight months of constant drug and alcohol abuse. The Producer, now penniless, checked himself into rehab. He came out one month later and began to be harassed by record label attorneys. Desperate to get the album done and fulfill his contract, he borrowed money from his former drug dealer and returned to Detroit. In the fall of 1987 in Detroit The Producer recorded "Be My Lover" with Liz Thomas and "I Believe In You" and "Love Hurts You Sometimes" with Lost Love. Shortly after, The Producer began to feel depressed. His inspirations were gone and he felt like he lost his musical edge in this moment of sobriety. He began partying again and eventually met a tragic faith. After a night of partying in a trendy club called The Warehouse in downtown Detroit. The Producer was confronted in the parking lot by two thugs sent by the Los Angeles drug dealer from whom he borrowed money. Unable to collect, the thugs proceeded to beat The Producer to a pulp and leave him for dead. Fortunately he survived. After a month of healing and rehabilitation, The Producer was released from the hospital in time to spend the holidays with his family. It was during this time that he got an ususpected letter. It was a pre-approved application for and American Express Gold Card. It was sent to him through an old inactive d/b/a. Feeling like this was and invitation to redeem himself, he took the card and went back into the studio to finish his albums. He recorded "If You Don't Know What To Do" with Liz Thomas and, “All I Want”, "Locked Up In Handcuffs", "Sneakin'' Around" and "Drip Dry Love" with Lost Love.In January of 1988 The Producer, having been written off by his previous record company, packed up his tapes and his Amex card and headed out to the famed MIDEM convention in Cannes. He was determined to secure a deal in Europe and he was never heard from again.
