Artist History
LUMIERE BIO - Lumiere is the French word light - The band feels its song titles best describe their music. Sedative - reflective of the purpose of the music, to sedate and pacify. Shiver - the hope to cause a physical and emotional response in the listener. Meth - our musical version of the substance and the power one has, given the right music, to create a mood within oneself without the use of such a substance. Jupiter - alluding to the band’s desire to make cosmic music. In its relatively short existence, Lumiere managed to create a sound that was distinctly theirs, despite the music scene they came from which is best described as college party rock. Many often describe Lumiere as mood music that is sedative and trancey. The band generated a loyal following and with its entrancing stage set up rarely played to less than 100 people. The goal of Lumiere’s music was to create a euphoric experience. The laconic vocals combined with dreamy and often mesmerizing guitars creates a hypnotic soundscape, an atmosphere of reverie in which one can exist. The melancholic themes of Gough’s lyrics (Shiver-“A secret smile escapes from inside you/ your face in a candle/ a flame I can see through...consciousness fading/ you’re slipping away/ sustained by a shiver/ life washed away”) are kept afloat only through drummer Doug Dean’s ability to solidify songs that would otherwise escape into space.Lumiere began in May 96'. Originally conceived by Jason Gough (vocals, guitar) and Rob Turner (bass) as an attempt to musically revisit the predominantly British shoegazer era of early 1990, from which emerged such bands as Lush, Catherine Wheel, The Verve and The Boo Radleys, to name a few. Gough and Turner hoped to expand on the origins of this style of music and take it to audiences that had not been exposed to music that stirs the subconscious and moves the mind. |
