Artist History
American Clarinetist Andrew Simon 38, has won acclaim on four continents for his brilliant musicianship and-in the words of one music journal - his "almost god-like technique." Michael Tilson Thomas noted his "formidable technique, flair, and musicianship". A graduate of the Juilliard School, Mr. Simon has won the International Clarinet Society Competition and the National Arts Club Competition in New York. He has been Guest Principal with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and the Mainly Mozart Orchestra. After winning the Artists International Young Musicians Auditions Clarinet Award in 1988, Andrew Simon made his debut in the Carnegie Hall Recital Hall. In its review of the event, the New York Times hailed his "brilliant" playing and, comparing him to Benny Goodman, cited his "fleetness and an ear for coloristic detail." Since his debut, Mr. Simon has embarked on a busy international career. He has appeared as soloist and taught master classes in China, the U.S.A., Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. He toured 16 Japanese cities under the sponsorship of Buffet-Crampon; and in 1992, became the first American-born artist to perform in North Korea. He is National Chairperson of the International Clarinet Assocation, and a regular contributor to five international music journals. He has been invited as guest artist to clarinet conventions on four continents. Mr. Simon has been heard on WQXR in New York and on BBC 3 with Peter Donohoe. He has been seen on American, Yugoslavian, Chinese, North Korean and South Korean television. Andrew Simon is currently Principal Clarinet of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he has appeared more than 40 times as soloist. He has recently recorded the Wagner/Baermann Adagio with the orchestra, conducted by David Atherton. During the 1998/9 Philharmonic season, he will play John Corigliano's clarinet concerto, which he has studied with the composer. He is a Concert Artist for Boosey & Hawkes / Rico Intl. Division. |
