Artist description
Living Legacy (Tuff Gong International) is an apt title for the new CD by STEEL PULSE. The group's music has spanned several decades on both sides of the Atlantic, from London to Jamaica, and all across the globe. STEEL PULSE is currently headlining the TEVA Spirit of Unity Tour, which will bring them around the world once again, from the U.S. to South America to the Middle East. Recorded in Paris, Amsterdam and San Juan, Living Legacy continues the chronicling of STEEL PULSE's spiritually uplifting musical energy. It is their first album for the Tuff Gong label.STEEL PULSE are rebels with a cause. It was at a fundraising concert in Washington, DC that the group met Spike Lee, who soon selected Hind's song “Can't Stand The Heat" for his film "Do The Right Thing.”The songs on Living Legacy reflect the ideals of a band definitely concerned with doing the right thing. "Ku Klux KIan" (“Minding my own business, I came face to face with my foe, disguised in violence from head to toe”) and "Back To My Roots" articulate the group's political and social convictions, but pop rules on cuts like "In My Life" and "Sound System." The CD is truly a living legacy honoring friends, icons, and moments in history, dubbed 'livications', rather than 'dedications' in the liner notes. Says Hinds: “We deal with positive forces. We're not here to start a physical revolution, we're just here to open everybody's eyes and let them check for themselves." Founding members David Hinds (rhythm guitar and lead vocals), Selwin Brown (keyboards, vocals) and Steve Nesbitt (drums) form the core of STEEL PULSE. The group is rounded out by a nine-piece ensemble that includes Alvin Ewen on bass, Sidney Mills on keyboards, Clifford Mooney on guitar, Conrad Kelly on drums and percussion, and recent additions Donna Sterling and Sylvia Tella singing background vocals. Amidst the setting of the British Punk scene of the mid-1970's, the Rock Against Racism movement and cultural scene was underway, embraced by a new group called STEEL PULSE. Reggae roots infused with a strong pop sensibility provided fertile turf for these young musicians from Birmingham, England. STEEL PULSE became the only reggae group in the UK to win a Grammy, in 1986 for their album Babylon The Bandit, and have received four additional Grammy nominations. STEEL PULSE's message of hope, education and activism paved the way for their 1993 invitation by the Clinton Administration to become the first reggae band to perform during inaugural festivities in Washington, DC. This message, along with the accessible, highly spiritual music of STEEL PULSE has struck a chord with music lovers worldwide. |
