Artist description
Formed in the winter of 1991, Ashes evolved slowly through the 90’s. Exploring music for its own sake, the band painstakingly developed its own rich repertoire of sound, developing synergies amongst its members, and a unique voice, with barely a concern for reaching a broad outside audience. Awakening from virtual obscurity, the band now finds a public eager to hear its sincere, unadulterated style which is complemented by the band’s superb technical craftsmanship. Almost a decade in the making, Ashes is more than ready and capable of satisfying the most discriminating listener.Ashes has a distinctive, yet eclectic, style. References can be made quite fairly to early Pink Floyd, The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Beatles, This Mortal Coil, and Slowdive. Even so, the band rises above their influences, striking out into new territory all their own. And while a common thread runs through their music, these songwriters have an apparent aversion to repeating themselves or deriving ideas from any single genre. A hallmark of their new release, "Swirl," is its very diversity - one track reminds the listener of Tom Waits, the next hints at Aphex Twin. Even so, Ashes does an incredible job of keeping all of the pieces flowing, the diversity becoming one of the music’s most refreshing aspects. As a first album, "Swirl" is nothing less than monumental – with something to offer everyone. It is diverse without being unfocused, fresh and classic. It captures moods and emotions that have become uncommon in the post-modern 1990’s. Both with and without words, Swirl expresses the simple fact that contrived angst and obligatory cynicism are not all that today’s music has to offer. Ashes’ music transcends today’s suffering with its sweet melodies, complex moods and refreshingly honest approach. |

Press Reviews
By David K. Roberts WSE on Monday, February 1, 1999 - 10:34 am:To all in Ashes, I was just in the Seraph studio last night finishing up on a remix for the long enduring compilation, when Gene gave me your CD to take home for a listen... I must say; I am extremely impressed with the writings. The diversity and atmospheric qualities add a lot to the overall feeling. It is really hard for me to get in to music with a significant amount of guitars, but your music really puts all that aside. From one Seraph band to another, I must say that I am pretty proud to be released under the same company as you. Best Wishes, David K. Roberts With Sirens Entranced --------------------------------------------------------------------------------By Miska on Thursday, February 11, 1999 - 12:29 pm:I also recieved a copy and i have to agree...the cd is brilliant....no two songs are alike in style, texture and felling yet it flows well from one track to another...i just hope our new release will match up. Cheers Miska |
