Artist History
Megahurtz the bandıs fourth disc (third full-length) finds Milwaukee-based pet.engine revitalized and revamped. Always a reliable grungy pop band with great songwriting skills, pet.engine has taken a new approach with Megahurtz and the result is a 70-minute, 12-song disc with more dynamic arrangements and greater sonic depth than ever before."I think we are all a lot more satisfied with these songs because we had time to write and re-write our parts," said singer and guitarist Steve Ziel. " We wrote a ton of songs for this record. In the past we would come up with the 10 to 15 songs we thought were cool, come up with an arrangement and record them. This time we wrote 30 songs, labored over each arrangement, and demoed each song. We were able to do a lot of self-editing." That large pool of tunes put pet.engine in the position to sequence a disc of great variety and depth. In addition to the familiar melodic pop assault of "Aweful Taste" and "If I Did," there are twinges of Radiohead on "Pilot Star" and "Prequel," and nods to the likes of Foo Fighters throughout. And it comes, at least, in part from a broader approach to songwriting, which was once solely the domain of frontman Ziel, and some time spent demoing on a mini-disc recorder. "It was more collaborative this time around," Ziel said. " We were able to spend more time on each song, affording us the luxury of trying out everyoneıs ideas. On Feeling Like a Hundred Bucks, we were so hurried, when the recordings were done, we were stuck with things we wished we would have changed." That time spent holed up recording demos also afforded greater experimentation with sounds, opening new vistas. Vintage guitar sounds and a bank of analog synths add spice to Megahurtz. "This time we were able to do a lot of self editing and I think it shows," said Ziel. "This is the first recording I can actually listen to without having an anxiety attack....seriously." |
