Artist History
Lowell M. Watkins was born October 19, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His interest in music began at an early age when his mother introduced him to the piano and gave him lessons that continued through his teen years, resulting in top honors from the National Guild of Piano Teachers. At college, he majored in music and received his bachelor's degree in music education from West Chester State Teachers College in Pennsylvania in 1947. He earned a master's degree in music education from Columbia University in 1948. His professional career began at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1948 and spanned a full forty years at that school. Throughout his tenure, he performed numerous piano recitals. He also had a strong interest in the pipe organ, and was choir director and organist at several area churches for many years. He often visited the Washington National Cathedral to experience the breathtaking beauty of live organ music. After his retirement in 1988, he continued to work faithfully on his piano repertoire at home. The pieces presented here were the last recordings made in November 1993, a year before Mr. Watkins passed away. |
