Press Reviews
Black Earth Cool with a capital 'K'.It's aggressive machismo all the way with Black Earth. They feed you thick, electric bass lines combined with intense staccato verbal battery. Intermixed-cum-melodic refrains and shadowing backup vocals. The band varies its rhythms but usually produces a steadfast clenched fist at chorus time. One of Black Earth's best features is its undaunted attack on politics. They don't shy away from the subject even at the most local of levels: San Diego's own music scene. "Local scene is killing me" chants their lead vocalist against a percussionist reprise of "I wanna get out/I wanna get out/I wanna get out." It's no secret that the life of the musician isn't easy. But here in SD many professionals complain about the inhospitable atmosphere and unappreciative crowd. If we don't want our musicians to relocate elsewhere, we'd better heed Black Earth's message. -- Dylan Roberts |
