Press Reviews
FOLIO Northeast Florida News and Opinion Magazine 3/7/00MusicboxHeavy metal, in its purest sense, is dead. The genre reached its peak, sad as it was, with the onslaught of hair bands in the mid- to late-'80s. The backlash to this unfortunate movement is evident in the songs of everyone from '80s thrash metal pioneers- turned-alterna-rockers Metallica to the ‘90s rap-core of Korn and the like. But Jacksonville musician Steven Marque sees things differently. Marque thinks the pendulum of popular music is swiftly swinging his way, back to a new era of heavy metal. Marque believes that today's mainstream music, the aforementioned rap-cam and hard-core hip hop styles is an Indicator of where the market is going. [Its no coincidence, his heavy metal combo, the Steven Marque Syndrome - part '80s metal, part new school -hit just In time to ride this "new wave of heavy metal." The music on the Stem Marque Syndrome CD "Chiaroscuro" Is a blend of traditional metal with spoken, pseudo-narrative rap that tells a story - a concept album If you will. "The places) are more like movies rather than songs," Marque says. Marque's offbeat vocal tales are inspired by his fascination with books and horror movies and encourage visualization of his themes.Four singles from the record are currently charting on MP3's alternative metal charts,. The Steven Marque Syndrome Is also working on a music video, which the band hopes will air In April on MTV's "Back to the Rock" heavy metal show hosted by Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. Marque says the band is on the hunt for a record label and already has plans for a second CD.Marque, a Richmond, Va. native, believes his band's success is due, In part, to the support of the Jacksonville community. "We would be nowhere If people didn't dig [our music) Marque says. He also says that audiences today desire an instrumental approach to song writing - a position he is happy to fill.Though Marque, who holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts, puts his music first, he began his professional career as a painter. He has also delved Into Interactive multimedia software and movie making, and considers himself, foremost, a visual artist "This is an art project," says the songwriter about his. music. "(it) doesn't subscribe to regular song (style)." |
