Artist description
Nineteen cultivates silence in their songs,
the instruments breathe, the timbres of
the vocals compliment the sonic landscape,
the lyrics range from delicate, sorrowful
love songs to sexy tone-poems. The band
borrows from the dramatics of 70's stadium
rock, with vibrant visual performances and
the construction of an alliance of intensity
between the players that causes the
audience to feel like voyeurs. Their
influences range from ACoDC to Lou Reed
to Prince to Jane's Addiction. Lyrically,
Hendrik may ponder the moon as a symbol
of femininity ("Moon Song") or just pound
out some rage: "I'm nursing off chaos, Baby
- my stomach's long and lean, my ego's my
enemy, luscious, cruel and mean." ("Chaos, Baby") |

Artist History
Like magic, nineteen formed in August of '97. The long-standing friendship shared between Hendrik, Colin and Chris inevitably led to the birth of the project and, after gaining momentum, the band released their debut CD, A Cradle for Your Soul, this January. You can hear the band at clubs like the TT the Bear's Place, Coney Island High, the Linwood Grill, the Elvis Room, and the Kirkland, performing with bands like Brit Pop band, the Candyskins.
Nineteen will tour to the Midwest in April 1999. |

Press Reviews
"The lyrics are sensuous and surreal, sometimes using imagery from Greek mythology, other times playing on the abstract and the carnal…Every syllable is present as Gideonse attacks rich onomatopoetic phrases like: 'Slip, slither, drag and listen/slice, sliver, kiss and cower.'"
-The Boston Sunday Globe.
"A smart and often brooding effort, the CD leaves enough air around the instruments to let the trio's craft, dynamics and intimate lyrics shine."
-Boston Herald.
"The Medford-based band creates slow, poetic music that meanders like a horny couple unable to get out of bed on a Sunday morning. The sparse instrumentation lets the words shine as the true stars."
-Bay Windows.
