    Artist History
ROCK & ROLL IS SUCH A HASSLE: THE VARSITY DRAG STORY."Sounds like the Sex Pistols playing fast Monkees songs."Such was the verdict of a British ex-rock star (who shall remain nameless), upon hearing one of the numbers through which Varsity Drag has been rampaging lately to appreciative Bay Area audiences. Fusing influences from 60s garage and 70s punk to 80s pop, the Varsity Drag thus find themselves without a genre — but well-equipped with a pithy description of their sound. While the Drag may be one of the newest contenders on the scene, their lineup spans the last decade of so-called "alternative" rock. "As far as I’m concerned, that thing about the Monkees and the Sex Pistols is a compliment of the highest order," remarks Ben Deily proudly. "That’s pretty much what we were aiming for." Ben, a founder (with Evan Dando) of Boston’s infamously once-punk Lemonheads, co-fronted the band with Evan and co-wrote their first four releases, before making the first of several attempts to retire from the rock ‘n’ roll grind. But Bay-Area locals Greg Randall and Will Anderson — of long-time punk stalwart Unbalanced — had other ideas. "I heard Ben had moved out here, so I stalked him by email and got him to come to one of our shows," says Greg. "I guess he liked us." (Greg has since left the band to pursue other musical avenues.)With the addition of drummer and recently-arrived Iowa native Ian Miller, the boys were ready to hit whatever stage would have them. But first, the eternal rock ‘n’ roll dilemma: a name. "Band names are — by their very nature — stupid," opines drummer Ian. "We solved our naming dilemma by enlisting the helpful staff at Denny’s to pick a name off a sheet of paper." The winning name, taken from a dance craze of the 1920s, seems ideally suited to this gang’s decidedly ambivalent attitude. "We love doing this, don’t get me wrong," declares bass player Will. "But, seriously, what with carrying equipment, trying to schedule practice...let’s face it, rock ‘n’ roll is such a hassle."
