Artist description
The music of The Purplechickens is hard to pin down, as cliché as it might sound. Label-happy people would place it under the pop-rock category (the word "alternative" is a big NO-NO for the band--okay, so it says "alternative" here at MP3.com...so sue us). Aldus, the band's vocalist and chief songwriter, on the other hand describes the music as "poppest of the pop" (said with a snicker). Structure-wise, the sound is an amalgamation of pop-filled melodies, chord changes and bass lines, heavy and texture-laden guitars, jazz-laced drumbeats and intelligent (obscurist?) lyrics. People have noted that The Purplechickens' music has familiar-sounding elements but for some reason sounds fresh at the same time. The rest of the label-tagging is up to the listener. |

Artist History
The Purplechickens. Not Purple Chickens, Purple Chicken, Spotted Roosters or whatever. Although "Boutros Boutros Boutros Boutros" would sound nice. The band was formed by original members Aldus Santos, Adrian Arcega, Eli Balce and Bits Victoria (currently with poetry-rock band Talula Craft) in December of 1997. All of them belonged to the same organization in UP Diliman--UP Quill (the premier literary org in UP)--and it so happened that the guys were itching to let out their musical frustrations with previous bands. Why "The Purplechickens?" How they got the name is a long story…It was supposed to be the name for a proposed football team for their org (the idea never pushed through). Circa 1997: it was the band's first gig (alongside rapcore band Slpashock) and they never actually bothered to think up of a name. For lack of a catchy and non-pretentious name they initially called themselves Dodong's Purple Chickens, "Dodong" being Dodong Gamallo (of noise band Raul) who had to act as a mic stand--such equipment were lacking during the said gig. Eventually the organizers found one, and the "Dodong" part jokingly had to be removed. Up to now no one has a clear idea as to why half of the name stuck. The band went through a series of shakeups and personnel changes (one of which was having Quincy Jacinto of Bazurak as skinsman). The current lineup consists of Aldus, Adrian, Eli, Mayo Uno Martin (of No Flowers for Milagring), who joined in 1999, and second guitarist Jo Hernandez (who also plays with rock band Ginseng). The Purplechickens have played gigs both in UP and in places such as Mayric's, 70's Bistro, Freedom Bar and arthouse Oracafe |
