Press Reviews
Evil Monkey TrioMotion Audio Labs Shamrock has a song called "Difuser," Difuser has a song called "Seven Minute Lull," so is Seven Minute Lull working up a new song called "Underside"? Is this scene a little incestuous? No matter, Difuser's eagerly awaited CD debut sounds like no one else ... in town. It's frustrating to describe Difuser because of the impossible-to-avoid similarities to the most influential band of the decade, Nirvana. At one point, Difuser even considered paying the bills as a Nirvana tribute band. They stink of teen spirit. Difuser's Erv Felker fronts the band with the same shaggy-throated melodies wrapped in barks and barbed-wire, and the trio boasts the same mix of aggression and catchy pop of Nirvana's fledgling debut, "Bleach." Difuser, though, attacks the air while they're all smiles, belying the resignation expected of this brand of grinding guitars and stomping fury. The Oklahoma address may have a lot to do with this divergence, because more than a few times the band walks the line -- like Johnny Cash, that is. Tracks like "Bubba 'n' Sissy," "Broke Down" and certainly "Jethro Tulsa" are built atop possibly inadvertent retro, roadhouse grooves, complete with snare shuffles and twangy guitar accents. It almost makes Difuser's music seem a just a shade dirty, trashy, a bit more dangerous, even throughout the beautiful ballad "Surrender Dorothy." In a world in which everything is above ground, the slightest whiff of subversion is refreshing. -Thomas Conner, Tulsa World |
