Artist description
Diastereo's music is biomusic written as a soundtrack for evolution. This music is not written note by note, but painted on texture by texture and pattern by pattern using KoanPro generative music software (from SSEYO). The pieces are generated "on the fly" from random numbers according to a set of rules developed by the composer. Although the process sounds mechanical, the result is not, since so much of the emotion in music is expressed through texture and timbre. A generative music piece is a "music world" on which certain sound combinations are possible: the sound will differ every time it is played, but will always stay within the rules created by the composer. Creating generative music can be thought of as building a set of wind chimes that combines the musical power of an orchestra, a synthesizer and a recording studio with the ability to improvise. Diastereo's music is an eclectic mix, influenced mainly by minimalism (Steve Reich, Phillip Glass), impressionism (Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel), and modernism (Igor Stravinsky) and the processes of evolution that lead to biodiversity. Other influences include jazz, film music, Latin, world music, Young Marble Giants, Portishead, DJ Shadow, Brian Eno and Future Sounds of Londo |
