Artist description
We use chance operations, happy accidents, and synchronicity to compose our music. We have researched the compositional techniques of artists in a variety of different mediums and we are attempting to apply these techniques in the creation of electronic music. By introducing chance operations into our music making process we give up some ego control over the process in order to manifest a "third mind" that works through synchronicity, or what some call meaningful coincidences. We use the "cut-up" method originated by Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs. The cutup is a mechanical method of juxtaposition in which Burroughs literally cuts up passages of prose by himself and other writers and then pastes them back together at random. This literary version of the collage technique is also supplemented by literary use of other media. Burroughs transcribes taped cutups (several tapes spliced into each other), film cutups (montage), and mixed media experiments (results of combining tapes with television, movies, or actual events). Thus Burroughs's use of cutups develops his juxtaposition technique to its logical conclusion as an experimental prose method, and he also makes use of all contemporary media, expanding his use of popular culture. Cut-ups are the origins of today's sampling techniques. According to Genesi P-Orridge of Psychic TV, "We believe that the omnipresence of sampling and cut-up technologies will be seen as one of the most significant tooling developments for Cultural Engineering. For the first time in history every sound ever recorded in any medium is potentially available to be used, twisted, mutilated, enhance, driven thtough its own perceptual envelope and turned into whatever dream takes our fancy; only to be reprocessed, sampled, looped, mutated inot something else by another individual at a later date." In addition to the cut-up method, we utilize the chance operations used by John Cage including using the ancient I-Ching as an oracle for music composition. These processes loosen the Ego's control and allows the Third Mind to manifest. We also find it useful to utilize Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies. Oblique Strategies, like the I-ching, serves as an oracle in the composition process. |
