Artist description
My music is my voice. I've been singing for all my life, and strive to get better every day. If I could do one thing for the rest of my life, it would be to touch people through the songs that I write, to communicate the feelings that I have inside me with music. I believe that music is the greatest thing on Earth. Of all my songs, right now "Chelsea's Lullaby" is my favorite, but I like them all, really. Each is a creation of my complete heart and soul. And if you’ve got a second, I'd love to hear what you think of my songs, or about anything at all! E-mail me at maxka@cats.ucsc.edu and I’ll definitely respond! |

Artist History
I used to hum little songs that I'd created, when I was only four, but I wrote my first real song when I was fifteen. I just sat down with a pencil and a melody, and put some gosh darn words on a gosh darn piece of paper. It came out pretty well. It was called "The Fall of Letters in My Head," and to this day I still think that it's a good song. Then, when I wrote it, I thought nothing of it. I was going to grow up and be a computer programmer, or I was going to run a computer consulting corporation. The world of dreary drudgery called to me with its dollar-sign eyes and its stock-market mouth. I continued to write songs, and think nothing of them. One day, when I was eighteen, I thought that I should record my songs, just for posterity, and so I wouldn't forget the melodies. First I recorded "The Fall of Letters in My Head," and then I recorded another song, called "Never Mind." I thought my mother would be impressed with my recording endeavor, so I called her up to hear the songs-- mostly because I'd done something cool electronically with "Never Mind." She listened to the songs. She turned to me and said, "Those are some really nice songs, and you have a beautiful voice." I was blown away. All I'd ever wanted to do was sing, but I'd never thought I was good enough. Music was my life, I just couldn't make it a career, because I wasn't good enough. I played my song, "The Isle of View," for my little brother Moe. This was one of the defining moments of my life, because when it was finished, he turned to me and said something that changed my course forever. "Max," he said, "you have a gift." So I decided that I was going to be a musician. I gave up my sick corporate nightmares, and released myself into the world of music. I knew that I was going to write songs for the rest of my life. Writing songs is the greatest thing that I could do-very few things (I could count them on half one hand) have inspired me more than the music I hear every day. To be inspired every day—how great is that? To inspire others every day…what I wouldn't give… And since that point, everything has encouraged me to go in my direction. All the music I hear, all the people I meet, and everything I see tell me my fate is to create inspiration in the form of words set to music, played over whatever medium is available. |
