GODS OF MUSIC Review by: Alex Coch
ARTIST: JOE KS KID
SONG: I DONT WANNA SAY GBYE
GENRE: ALTERNATIVE EDGY POP ROCK
SIMILAR: BATTERSHELL, VERUCA SALT, ALANIS(?)
Although I Dont Wanna Say Gbye is a song that
is very well structured and produced, it wasn’t
love at first sight –all emotions are spelled
flat out (not to mention I can’t really relate
to them – they are too female-specific for me)
and the limited vocal range applied here (less
than half an octave) is not quite to my taste.
However, the song not only bears repeated
listening, it actually requires it. I Dont
Wanna Say Gbye is, in fact, addictive. The
deceptive simplicity of its vocal line (both
verse and chorus) serves the song better than
any other, more elaborate approach, and I can
see many women actually relating to the topic
and straightforwardness of the song’s lyrics.
I was actually humming along after few listens,
which I don’t normally do. And last but not least,
the guitar riffs are instantly catchy and gratifying,
with enough grittiness without the anger, a perfect
complement to the (again) deceptive simplicity of
the vocal presence. Competently (and deliberately)
restrained musicianship conveys the song’s bounty
of heart and soul, a fact that is also revealed
after several listens (since it sounds somewhat
detached and glassy at first). All in all,
I Dont Wanna Say Gbye is an edgy pop song
with enough character and (at the same time)
naïveté to be enjoyed the world over. I, for one,
will pop it in again as soon as I finish this
masterpiece…
