Artist History
"...the Sophistos themselves were the product of a much greater institution located a mere 3 blocks away: Lansdowne Junior Secondary School. Initially formed as “The Yachtsmen” and featuring only Andre Arias-Rivas the drummer and yours truly on organ, they played their first spectacle at the Grade 8 orientation showing off mostly Goblins covers and a particularly surfy version of “Smoke on the Water.” The next year they were joigned by Duncan Gidney on saxophone, and Mike Croy on bass forming the present day Sophistos, then carrying the name their school band teacher, Mr Hagen, gave them, the Lab Lads. After a wild performance of the hit “Robson-nova” at the year end band concert, the band changed their name to the Sophistos and lined up the first of a series of shows within the local teen concert community, the most memorable being their first show at which they added to the line up Eric Clark, lead volinist for the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, who was subsequently put under house arrest. During these glory years the Sophistos played with The Pirates, The Evaporators, Capt. Cook and the Nootka Sound, Fortune Maltese and the Phabulous Pallbearers, The Come Ons and many others local bands. They put down only a handful of tracks, the most comprehensive recorded by Dan, a gas attendent who also ran a recording studio out of his basement, and some earlier live recordings... At the moment of the writing of this article the band has decided to take a break after yours truly was set on fire during a recent performance and Duncan fled to Toronto in pursuit of the pro. video game circut. .." |
