Artist History
Thanks for taking the time to learn more about this band. They are a funky "ska-punk-swing" band called Lyster (pronounced "list"-er) Lower and hail from Tacoma, Washington. Lyster Lower was formed two weeks before Thanksgiving of 1997. At the time it consisted of four guys: Lew Roberts, vocals; Sol Cantwell, guitar; Jason Gough, bass; West Alio, drums. The band had little direction except for the desire to play ska and punk music for anyone who would listen.Their first show was at the Club Rendezvous on the University of Puget Sound campus. They opened for an Irish pop-rock band, Pint o' Guinness. Since their first show they have acquired three horns: Mike Tiemann, trumpet; Ryan Guggenmous, bari and alto saxophone; John Fitzhugh, trombone. A new drummer, Matt Probert has also joined the band. Recently due to the fact that the band prostitutes itself to clubs, a new bassist, Aaron Cantwell, has replaced Jason. They have developed a sexy, sizzling, original sound that inspires the most uncoordinated to dance.Lyster Lower cannot be considered just a ska band, swing band, or punk band. They love playing all of these styles and blend them together into a smokin' groove. They usually play some great covers at shows to round out the set--warped to their own style of course. A ska-swing "Stray Cat Strut" is a regular. They also like to call upon "Under the Sea" when the mermaids show up.Lyster Lower's recordings are an excellent representation of their music, but lack a lot of the emotion that is presented at a live show. On stage, they let their wild side out and the audience gets drawn into the excitement. The band has a professional and very involved stage presence. Needless to say, there is always jumping and dancing on the stage as well as the floor.Recent news:The "Science in Context" release 2 will be out in the next couple weeks. To get on the list for the album, contact the band.Everyone (including Mike) will be back from all corners of the earth on the 17th of January. The band will start playing shows again in early February. Watch your local newspapers and call the clubs for dates. |
