Published on the America Fans homepage. June 15, 2000:With all this talk about emerging artists and MP3 and such--Has anyone else heard the Endorphins new CD, Release the Endorphins? Talk about grass roots music making. If you like Dan Peek's work in America and his solo stuff, then you'll like this CD. I've been listening to it the past couple of days and I got to tell you, it casually snuck up on me and has taken me hostage. It's like a mix between Dan Peek, James Taylor, the Ventures, with a little John Lennon and Carlos Santana thrown in. All in all, not a bad grab bag of sounds and styles. Some real rock and roll bloodlines there. Listening to the first song "Firelight Ball" sounds like you stumbled onto an unreleased Dan Peek song from the early days of America. "Hey How Have You Been" is a sweet, James Taylor-infuenced ballad. There are a few Dan Peek-inspired rockers, like "Walk Away" and my personal favorite, "I Never Knew." If you like the Beatles, especially "Dear Prudence," you'll appreciate "Comfort Me" and a really cool song "Sparkwood & 21." And, if you get tired of following along at home, there are three instumentals without those annoying things called lyrics that can really slow you down while you sing along, including the Ventures "Miserlou" and their own "Surf Cowboy." It's basically just four guys and their guitars, making music that they realize very few people will have the opportunity to hear, and having a great time doing it. To me, that's what music making is all about. Kevin S.
