Artist description
Chris Plays Guitar is a five-member bar-rock band with a twist of Americana, a splash of humor, a razor sharp wit and a sonic exploration of the phenomenon of drinking and partying all night until you fall down. They play songs about bisexual girlfriends, stupid people, MTV’s demise, sex, drinking, the defunct state of the American Dream, bad music, dirty sex, sticks up politicians’ asses, drinking, sex, and more drinking. Their live shows are a mix of creative guitar work and unforgivingly humorous lyrics while they rub dirt, sweat, tears, and tequila into their own wounds. |

Artist History
When guitarist/songwriter Patrick Reetz and drummer Bryan Zera first started jamming together, they both recognized that it was a great pairing of two incredible minds-- and not just because they both liked Heinekin, South Park, brunettes, hockey, and They Might Be Giants, but because they both thought it would be fun to incorporate a Madonna mannequin with a “Too fuck to drunk” T-shirt into their live set. While that dream has yet to come to fruition, their other one about putting together a fun, energetic, original yet sarcastic rock band recently has.
During his first year in Fresno, Reetz spent many hours in a dark, ghetto-fabulous apartment drinking cheap wine and reading various books by Kerouac, Neitzsche, Bukowki, Vonnegut, Hubert Selby, and Hunter S. Thompson in between checking ebay for vintage guitar gear and writing bittersweet songs, all the while wondering why he didn’t have a girlfriend. It was Zera who suggested that they take his songs, find a few more musicians, and open up a donkey show/rock n’ roll bar in Tijuana to showcase their tongue-in-cheek music. They found just the
musicians they needed after lots of soul-searching, and put the Tijuana donkey show bar idea on the
backburner.
By placing ads on local websites (e.g.: “play bass for us and we’ll ‘take care of’ your annoying mother in law”) and whoring their talents out to other
musicians in order to make contacts around town, our two heros eventually stumbled upon the other three members of Chris Plays Guitar.
Mike Alexander was planning on running for Governor of California with the campaign slogan “Put a bass player in office: it’s all uphill from there,” but decided to offer his support for Larry Flint instead. With experience in local bands A Tribe Called Mike, Out of Hand, Junimoon, and San Diego favorites Rare Form, Mike is the oldest member of the band and therefore easiest to pick on.
Singer Jason Miller was introduced to Reetz and Zera after they were about ready to kill themselves having auditioned an absurdly large number of pathetic local singers (most notable was Mr. Heavy Metal Mullet Man who was too frightened to sing with anyone else in the same room). Miller brought a pop-sensible voice, intelligent vocal phrasing, and a nack for writing songs that fit with the rest of the band’s catalog as well as a note from the psychiatric house that said he was allowed out every evening as long as he behaved.
The band was happy and ready to move forward, but the feeling that something was missing wouldn’t leave them. “This may just be the liquor talking,” stated Reetz one practice, “But what we need is a big, old, black, soulful blues guitarist who looks like he belongs in a dank and dirty bar in New Orleans.” “Yes,” said Zera. “And his name needs to be Chris, since the band’s name is going to be Chris Plays Guitar.” “I think I know just the guy,” said Miller.
At the next practice, Miller presented guitarist Chris Carey, a tall, skinny white kid from Coarsegold. “Well,” said Miller, “at least his name is Chris.” |
