Artist description
³Pidginhole² is the self titled debut album of an exciting new band from the city we all love to hate, Los Angeles. Over a driving back beat of post punk garage rock, head Pidgin Steve Cornell creates an eclectic mix of practically every pop style of the last quarter century. One moment, you¹re hearing an amped up middle eastern wedding band, and the next moment the Tijuana Brass is blaring out over a hillbilly lament. A song about mass suicide is set to an ancient Motown beat with a cheesy vox organ riff so infectious that you just want to serve up the kool aid! This is music for those who are impatient with the current trend of songs that stretch out a single, tired idea for over six minutes. Pidginhole's songs are short, sharp and catchy, with hooks coming from every direction. There's one wild electronic solo that Cornell swears is a xylophone, but it sounds more like a chimpanzee with a dentist's drill. Bouzoukis, pedal steel guitars, trombones, violins and other less identifiable sounds are all stirred together to create the Pidginhole wall of sound. Some of the lyrics are wry, in a country western or Noel Coward kind of way, with titles like "What's So Good About Goodbye?" and "No Time Like Never". ³Wake Me Up (When The Show Is Over) is a slacker lament, done as a garage style talking blues a la ³Moulty² by the Barbarians. The haunting ³Waterfall² is a throwback to early psychedelic BeeGees or Pink Floyd, complete with backwards guitars and opaque lyrics. In ³One Way Trip To Nowhere² Cornell even predicts his own rise to stardom and subsequent fall back to the gutter, accompanied by a wistful banjo and various electronic boops and beeps.Listening to the entire CD is like tuning into a late night college radio show where the DJ is playing anything they feel like. The result is a wonderfully satisfying mix of old and new sounds, polished up and reconfigured to create a brand new sound you can¹t quite put your finger on. Pidginhole can't be pigeonholed! |
