    Artist description
Quinsin Nachoff is a saxophonist and composer sharing his time between Toronto and New York City. He was one of 15 semi-finalist chosen from over 200 international entries in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Saxophone Competition. He was a coach at the Banff Centre for the Arts (May 2001), headed by Kenny Werner with special guest artists Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas and Jim Black. In the fall of 2001 Nachoff won the Canada Council Jazz I.D. Competition showcasing the top young jazz groups in Canada. Critic Geoff Chapman wrote of his performance at the showcase "The final act [Quinsin Nachoff Quartet] was in some ways best of all...The Nachoff horn soared and swooped, with explosive moments and long, long lines that declared his resolute sense of adventure...The tunes...were good harbingers of 21st-century jazz." He premiered his piece 'Whorls' for saxophone and string quartet in Paris in December of 2001 and will be touring Japan with his Quartet performing original music in May of 2002. He toured with the Tim Posgate Horn Band in June and July of 2001 and in the summer of 2000 with his own group across Canada to promote his debut CD, Quiescence. Nachoff has attended numerous workshops (Banff Centre for the Arts, Lake Placid Workshop, Schweitzer Institute, Eastman Summer Program) where he has studied and performed with Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, Peter Erskine, Dave Douglas, Jim McNeely, Maria Schneider, Kenny Wheeler to name a few. Originally from Toronto, Canada, he has toured across Canada with Don Thompson (who has recorded classic albums with Jim Hall, Paul Desmond and George Shearing) at all the major jazz festivals. As a composer Nachoff has written original soundtracks for many independent films with a variety of instrumentations. "Infinitely Near" by director Anthony Cristiano was selected to be shown at the Montreal International Film Festival (1999).

    Press Reviews
"I listened to your CD just before I left my home for this most recent trip, and I'll be honest with you: I think your CD is as good or better than any other CD I've heard in the last couple of years or more. Seriously! The tunes are fresh, your playing (and the trumpet player's) is EXCELLENT; I dig the bass and drums, too. ... congratulations, and Bravo!" --Peter Erskine P.S. "like a Shelly Manne record for the Millenium or something" was my first thought. Shelly is popular around my house ..."
