    Artist History
With atmospheric guitar sweeps, hazy vocals and carefully constructed noise, the post-rock of Theta Wave State is consistently psychedelic, but powerfully attentive. Which makes sense given the meaning of the band’s name: a blurring of the line between sleep and consciousness. And with influences like Sonic Youth, Stereolab, and My Bloody Valentine, it’s no wonder that the quartet—vocalists/guitarists James Hanna and Rick Hamedani, drummer Keith Hopkin and bassist Frank Iadevaia—have taken on such an hypnotic approach.Five years ago, Hanna, Hamedani, and Hopkin began working together on Long Island in various projects. After experimenting with punk rock and ther genres the trio finally found a style that soothed their souls. After a two-year stint with a lead vocalist and an attempt to play without a bassist, the band began toying with alternate guitar tunings and effects pedals. Iadevaia was acquired and their vocalist departed. With vocal duties now shared by Hanna and Hamedani, Theta Wave State was ready to rock. North Of January Records was impressed with the band’s music and quickly agreed to market them. The Vermont-based label, whose catalog includes releases by Flowchart and Civic has released Theta Wave State’s first proper recording, a three-song 12”.The band has played at the 1997 WE Fest in Wilmington, North Carolina, the 1999 CMJ Music Fest, CBGBs, Knitting Factory and several other venues throughout New York, Boston, and D.C.
