Press Reviews
Bay City, MI based So To Speak has worked the underground scene for two years now. Many shows state-wide, new friends and fans later, the band has proved they can grow more than just a couple of years older. They have developed a sound unheard of in the Tri-Cities area."Regaining the percent of zero is a general statement implying to returning to where you started," said guitarist Michelle Lukezic, regarding the bands decision to title the new E.P. Emotions seem to be the key for the quintet, as the band all agree on how difficult the path is to returning to a level state of mind, after a losing relationship. In much the same way the band views emotions, "regaining the percent of zero" was crafted to give them a fresh start. Unhappy with the over-all sound of their 1999 full-length debut "the disfunction theory," So To Speak made a true effort to craft their songs 110% more mature, solid, and clearer to the bands own vision. "This disc says a lot more for us, since all that has happened in our lives," said drummer Jordan Alvarado. "A lot of us have lost and gained things. The title says the message in itself." The band also finally got to enlist the full talents of bassist Don Jones and keyboardist Leslie Malenfant, after spending time on the road together becoming a more cohesive group over thepast year."Regaining the percent of zero" is a collection of songs the band took from B-sides and expanded upon. "We spent several hours writing vocals, keyboard lines, etc.," said Lukezic. "So it was definitely a creative learning experience and collaboration.""I don’t think personally any of our songs will ever sound the same," quipped front man Mike Armstrong. "We all bring different elements and that is So To Speak."Moving forward with the bands underground demeanor, DIY demands, and indie feelings has been a hard road, as it is for any band. For Armstrong, he could write a book on the lifestyle. "We plan on being in bands for the rest of our days on this Earth and if we become successful, then great. If we stay small and underground, that is fine too. We will continue to write great songs whether we are popular or not."Searching for a label is something that So To Speak feels will come along with time. While they feel they can move forward with or without one, the distribution and monetary support remain a gap in the idealism. What interests the band is finding a support system that falls in line along with their favorite bands, rather than some big flashy corporate names. Looking to other indie related groups, shows the possible paths the band are looking at."To me So To Speak means an implied sense of feeling that you just don’t come out directly and say," said Jones. "It’s like a hidden message.""So To Speak is about communication," added Armstrong. While a tour is being talked of for 2001, Michigan and surrounding states will still be the current available target for the band. A full length album is in the works, as many of the live shows feature more new music that isn’t available yet. The band is constantly writing. "We are always growing and changing musically," said Armstrong. "We plan to do everything in the style that suits us best...our way or the highway." ---Scott Baker, Affiliate of the Bay City Times |
