SCHOLA CANTORUM is a unique establishment in Russia created for the purposeof studying and teaching early Western European Mediaeval, Renaissance andBaroque culture and history. The School has for its goal the revival of theEuropean cultural traditions, primarily that of music culture, as well astraining specialists in this field.The curriculum for music study is aimed at the revival of the traditionsof solo and ensemble performance, on the basis of music sources fromGregorian chant to works by Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. The School instrumentsinclude chamber organs, recorders, bagpipes, fiddle, lutes, harpsichords,reed woodwind instruments, such as crumhorn and cornamuse, and otherauthentic instruments. Most of them are made in the School workshop. |

Artist History
The School was founded in 1992. Its 50 pupils from 6 to 17 years of ageare taught to perform early Western European instrumental and vocal music.They also take special courses of history, ethnography, medieval Latin anda modern European language depending on specialization. These courses arebased on the curricula being worked out by the teachers of SHOLA CANTORUMunder supervision of specialists from St.Petersburg University and theInstitute of Ethnography of the Peoples of the World.SCHOLA CANTORUM of St. Petersburg has established direct professionalcontacts with Schola Cantorum in Basel. The leading experts from thisearly music center expressed their willingness to take part in workingout the curricula and organizing master-classes, consultations and furthertraining of teachers and pupils.The School has got its main premises in a picturesque suburb ofSt.Petersburg - Peterhof - which is famous for its beauty and rich historic sites.For this reason the summer concert presentations which are a part of thepupils' practical training take place in the celebrated Peterhof 's parks. |
