Artist History
Chances are, if you wandered into a St. Louis nightclub in the mid 80s, either The Newsboys or Alazone were there, had just been there, or were going to be there. Playing a mix of alternative cover and original songs, both bands were an active mainstay of the local music scene. However by 1990, when the hairspray ran out and the gel dried up, both bands soon dissolved. Two of The Newsboys, Mike Luhning and Bob Tipton, immediately began writing original music together. At the same time, Dave Johnson and Ben Moyer, both of Alazone, each began playing a series of stints in other popular bands. To confuse things further, Bob and Ben worked a day job together at a record store. It was through this casual friendship that all four got together and continued the writing. Not content with the amount of noise they were making, they realized they needed a fifth.Eric Peterson, a guitar player who was the traveling soundman for the band Cookiemonsters, was introduced to the foursome through a mutual friend. It was the spring of 1992, and Liquid was born.Armed with great new original songs, Liquid began playing clubs all over the area. In addition to performing at all of the standard St. Louis venues, Liquid appeared at Fair St. Louis (1993), performed on the Variety Club Telethon (1996), and traveled to out of town venues (such as Kansas City's The Hurricane). Nevertheless, through all this, Liquid remained one of the area's best kept secrets. That particular band name must have been a popular choice however, as they soon discovered that at least three other bands were using it. After a series of locked-door meetings and collective head-scratching, they emerged as Earth City. With that new identity they have recently played shows at The Firehouse as well as the Riverport side stage. Earth City is also currently celebrating the release of their long-awaited CD "Nothing Is Complete", and planning a retooling of their existing web site with more multimedia and creative content. With the aid of new technologies, this collaboration of friends looks to the future where they may be the best kept secret no more. |
