Artist description
These mp3 files were created w/out the artist's knowledge or consent. They were taken from untitled cassettes, none of which included artwork or information. Slug is well-known in Florida and the US South, but no one seems to know who he is. He communicates through "friends" ("Slug told me to tell you that he's working on a new tape... I was over at his farmhouse the other day and I heard it.. really, it's true, I swear..."), and has surrogates perform for him at his infrequent "concerts". The photo above may or may not be of Slug, though I was assured that it was him by someone who also claimed to know where the man lived, but refused to divulge an address and was never "in the mood" to take me there. That said, this site is a bootleg, but it is also a tribute to a briliant musician, deliberately obscure, who would never get heard outside of his general geographical area otherwise. |

Artist History
As far as I can tell, Slug cassettes began appearing at record shops in Tampa, St.Petersberg, Orlando and Gainesville, Florida in the late 1980's. Intransitive Recordings (which I have absolutely nothing to do with) illegally published a 7" record of material from one of the cassettes in 1997. A CD entitled "Reasons From 3 of Me" appeared in late 1998, though there is no label name or contact information on it, so it is not known who published it. For live performances, Slug has been known to mail instructions and props to random people (most usually other musicians, but also unsuspecting college girls), directing them to dance with a 7 foot tall bowling pin, don a mask while otherwise naked and huff nitrous oxide, or fire super-highpitched tweeter guns at audiences. A cassette tape of backing sounds and noise is usually provided. I got one of these letters once, and was told to remove my clothes, wear a specially provided mask made of insulation foam with the eyes cut out, and stand motionless on a stage in between sets at a local rock concert (after instructing the confused sound man to put the provided cassette into the house PA and hit play when I gave him the signal). |
