Press Reviews
Temptation /// Evelien, the singer, is a student Classical Singing. She has an
incredible voice with which she can do everything (...) The four songs on
"Temptation" are rich with ideas, and the band is not afraid to experiment.
In addition, the songs are just really beautiful, and accessible as
well. It makes us wish for a full length CD. This is one of those bands that
makes you wonder why they don't have a record deal yet. (Dark Entries
Magazine) / / / With their demo Temptation, Orbis Pictus presents us a CD with four subtly created songs. Part of this can be explained by the fact that three of the four members of the band have a musical training. Add a philosopher with this, and you have the strong basis for 'Dutch Wave'. (Caer Gwydyon) / / /Orbis Pictus has produced three CD's thus far, all under direct management. Their latest, Temptation, contains four tracks and what is striking is the good quality of the tracks. The music is variegated and has lots of technical tricks in it (…) Orbis Pictus can be a real gain for the Dutch wave-scene. (Damnmusic)
/ / / Like the earliest moments of Dead Can Dance and the less pop moments of the Cranes, these songs are overflowing fountains of classical sensibilities filtered through a post-Goth aesthetic. Lilting songs of darkness and beauty. (music.lycos.com)
/ / / They got together in 1993 and after a break they changed their name from Valley Of Hinnom to Orbis Pictus in 1997. Most of them even studied music in one way or another and together they bring a combination of classical elements with modern, experimental soundscapes. A special voice is accompanied by guitars, keyboards, samples and sequencers. Temptation and Ave Verum Corpus combine a nervous
drum part with an atmospheric, melancholic wave. It seems as if these songs are going to a certain point without reaching it, leaving the listener curious for what's to come. The Ignorance Of This is calmer and Desert Song is an easy tempo, relaxing track. (Darker Than The Bat Magazine)
/ / / Orbis Pictus / / / A nicely done album avoiding a lot of the ordinary goth clichès. This is darkwave with 80's feel. Song three is very "cranes" sounding mixed with some early Clan of Xymox. I really enjoyed this album, a wonder that this group is looking for a record deal. It should have knocked on their doors long ago, because this is good material. Song four is also very cranes sounding, to be more precise "wings of joy " album sounding. It's most certainly not stoping after this first demo, a lot more is coming in years to come... Evelien van den Broek's voice is haunting on the last track of this cd. Give her a opportunity to use her voice more in future projects. To all record companies out there, give them a deal! / / / The guitars and voice of Evelien van den Broek forms a beautiful whole with the bass, keyboards and drums of Ruben Heijloo and Roy Bult. Van den Broek sings stirring and melancholic, Heijloo and Bult skilfully support this. The music of Orbis Pictus absolutely touches upon a tender string. (LIVE-XS)
/ / / This Amsterdam band was formed in 1993 as Valley Of Hinnom. They changed their name in 1997. It's all about dark gothic rock on this CD. With an atmosphere of loss and melancholy, beauty and reality. To me it brought back memories of Joy Division, Comsat Angels and other wave bands from the eighties. Like real gothic rockers this band also sounds very dark and melancholic. The nice thing about this CD is the high quality of the songs and the way they are performed.
The opener All I Ever Wanted is a pitch-black wavesong, heavy pounding with dreamy vocals. Just picture Joy Division with a female singer. Esse Est Percipi is a short gothic rocksong with itching synthesizer and a "nice" dark atmosphere. Abaddon sounds very sad and doomy. The guitar sounds really sickening while the vocals are very dreamy again. The best songs on the CD are The Flesh, a stately gothic song with fragile vocals and noisy distorted guitars, and Outside a melancholic song with an industrial touch. Listening to this CD I think it's time that this kind of music is gonna get popular again. With this band that won't be a problem. (Groovemaster)
