Artist History
James Pace & Charles Heusen grew up together in the same small town of Atlantic Highlands, NJ. With Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi residing only five minutes away, the boys always had something to strive for, something tangible to look up to; rock stars in their own backyard. Meeting through a mutual friend, JP plucked Charlie from music class, having pinpointed him as "the prodigy of the group." Sharing a dream, they kicked into gear. The Stone Pony in Asbury Park is where their first impressive gigs were played, and where they quickly became the house band known as "the Real Thing." The boys continued to astound the press and local radio by being the only 17 year olds to be co-headlining the Stone Pony. They also raised eyebrows by opening up for national acts such as Collective Soul, Material Issue, King's X and countless others. Having set the NYC and the Jersey Shore club circuit abuzz, and cementing their names and sound, JP and Chuck packed up to make the move to Philly. There they planned to light a fire under the local scene, making a name for themselves in yet another area, while expanding on their success thus far, and concurrently, attaining their college degrees. JP, Charlie and others began gigging out as the JP3. The idea was to experience the stages of Philadelphia and build an audience. Gigs were spread out through Philly, West Chester, Delaware, New Jersey(shore), NYC and Baltimore. This was a great time for growth as musicians, and performers, as well as making contacts. While still steeped in the Stone Pony ethic, but now also influenced by the Philly club scene, the boys began writing additional tunes that they turned into their highly successful EP, "Kings of Groove." With over 3,400 copies in circulation around the Northeast, this acclaimed debut EP has attracted plenty of media attention, and has caused heads to turn all over the northeast club circuit. Ted Greenburg (G-Love, Hooters fame) co-produced the EP, and Ted also played drums and added his studio partner Jay Davidson (Rolling Stones, Whitney Houston) on Hammond B-3. Deciding to work the circuit together, JP and Charlie added Ted and Jay to the lineup. The four played from the stages of the TLA to the local Grape Street Pub, to an opening slot position for Jeff Healey. Together they garnered quite a bit of attention, but personalities conflicted and the band set out to revamp with a new drummer and organist. This past summer, guitar legend Chris Duarte from Austin, Texas took a liking to James' music and asked him to hop onboard his Northeast tour. Honored, the band played out with Chris, while at the same time adding to their fame with CDNow.com's, "Best of the Best Unsigned Bands" competition. Out of 1200 entries the James Pace Band was chosen in the top 15 (there being no specific ranking order)! The band is primed, poised, practiced, and full of fire. They’re ready to showcase their material to the world, and fully plan on world domination. |

Press Reviews
Listen.com :: "...Gritty rock with hints of Funk and lots of bluesy, Hendrix-style guitar. Heavy bass/drum grooves...Paces' forceful fretwork…assert(s) a strong presence..." =|=|=|= Blues Review Magazine ~ Issue No. 57 May 2000 :: "...a rhythm-conscious group with a rock-oriented style, from choppy Chris Duarte grooves to Jimi-via-SRV-inspired, edge-of-feedback lead tunes. Pace even covers the prime Hendrix (and Duarte) vehicle "Drivin' South" very well...Exciting material..." =|=|=|= Philadelphia Weekly ~ CD & Live Review @ "Theatre of the Living Arts" (TLA) ~ September 10th, 1998 ~ by Tom Bilotta (Music Editor) :: "...There are plenty of bar bands out there but few are confident enough to play their own songs. One blues/rock group, the James Pace Band, knows that their groove is good enough not to hide behind covers. J.P. jams a home brew guitar mix of Chuck Berry riffs combined with Dave Navarro stylings from the Chili Peppers days, with some surf guitar tossed in for good measure. Excellent groove blues filled out by Charles' strong walking bass, Greenburg's rhythmic drumming, and a bit of Davidson's organs to fill in with a tad of funk. The total stew is one to hear, yet this is one of those must-see bands, if only to feel the raw energy they project once jamming in their groove..." =|=|=|= The Two River Times ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Music Scene ~ Night Grooves ~ by "Uncle Mike" ~ Opening Act for "Jeff Healy" ~ June 10th, 1998 :: "...Next up was a stop at The Tradewinds in S.B. (with my buds, the Bundys, as in Al and Peg) to check out the James Pace Band. This Philly based quartet, headed up by James Pace (out of the Atlantic Highlands) was lucky enough to land the opening slot for the Jeff Healy Band. Charles Heuser (bass), Ted Greenberg (drums), Jay Davidson (keys/sax), and James Pace (formerly of local faves, The Real Thing) made a strong showing. Opening up with an improv instrumental jam (cool guitar intro), the JPB easily won the crowd over with impressive renditions of "Big Hearted Woman" (way funky band groove), "People Say" (JP's best vocal/tight Meters cover), "Pourin' Down" (crowd fave), and "Drivin' South" (band took off on this one), before finishing up with Jimi's "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (great closer/entire band rocked). Look. What you have here is a hot lead guitarist, a tight rhythm section featuring a big time drummer and an accomplished keyboard player who doubles on sax. For having been together for just six months, the James Pace Band showed me a lot as an opening act! Oh. Yeah. Al and Peg liked them too!..." |
