Artist History
The details are sketchy, but here's what little I know. I first met Shay Thomas around ten years ago, when I was in the improvisational, performance art / music group "Cranberry Man". Shay was in the audience at one of our shows - I could make out his rabbit ears bobbing above the crowd. He introduced himself after the performance. I had heard of him before, but only by his faceless trickery at various local establishments. I found out by speaking with him, that he had a keen understanding of improvisational music and stage performance. We met on many occasions in those days and discussed our ideas on improvisational music theory. I was impressed enough by Shay, that I named the solo album that I was working on at the time after him (Shay's Day - 1991). I soon moved out of state and quickly lost contact with Shay, as he was hard to keep up with long distance. Years later, I moved back home. I ran into Shay at a local bar... he was the same old Shay that I remembered. I was putting together my first "Chris Fitts Variety Show" and thought that Shay would fit in perfectly. And he did... many thought his performance with his drummer, Paco, was the high point of the show. I offered Shay my help in promoting his unique performances and he accepted. Since then, Shay has added two more musicians to his band... Shay took up the Bass, Jonny "Bear" Bryant took over the guitar, and finally, Monkey joined to play a moog synthesizer and short-wave radio. As far as where he is from, he doesn't talk about it. I can piece together from his lyrics that he is apparently from another planet. This planet was invaded by "Orange Men". They took over and destroyed his home world. Apparently, Shay was able to leave his world before the end, and he made his way to Earth. From his lyrics, I discern that these "Orange Men" are on their way to Earth and will be here shortly. Shay will not confirm any of this. His careless attitude and gruff manor can be attributed to his ignorance of our Earthly ways. Chris Fitts tofg --- January, 2000 |
