Artist History
Parakeet Nelson is Chris Cates, John Wayne, Dwayne Wallace, and Dave Brockway, a rock/soul/jam band out of Athens, Ga. The band was originally formed in 1996 at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. by Cates, before relocating to Georgia in 1998. Arriving in Athens, Cates created a top notch ghetto music production company (Mealtime Brown Productions) and joined forces with formidable bass player Dwayne Wallace and Alabama guitar legend John Wayne. This was the beginning of the truely magical lineups that put things on a cosmic level the last three years. The line-ups included current and former Athens music scene legends Mike Elam, Gary Hartle, Seth Hendershot, Hiro Noodles and more.
Dave Brockway (formerly of day by the river), signed on as the full time drummer in Aug. '02 solidifying the current line-up which consequently lost elam, hartle & hendershot to an Austin, Texas migration. The band is currently touring regularly throughout the southeast in support of the new album "Risky Biscuits" which has been garnering praise from fans and music critics all over the world. Several songs from "Risky Biscuits" are currently available for download on this site.

Press Reviews
Flagpole Magazine Review for "Mealtime Brown presents... Parakeet Nelson" by Chris Morris.
Normally, I find hippy-dippy whitebread, feel-good, funk rock pretty nauseating; you know, the kind that bands like the spin doctors helped make popular in the early '90s. this was my first impression of parakeet nelson, pseudonym for songwriter and multi-instrumentalist chris cates adn his collaborators (which includes the prolific local multi-instrumentalist/indie rock impresario hiro noodles).
Forunately, further examination of parakeet nelson's debut proved my first impressions wrong. there is far too much genuine rock and roll spunkiness, pop sensibility and goofy humor to simply dismiss this as another groove rock wank-o-rama.
"Good Health" and the instrumental "Pigeon with the Money Riff" indicate this rock and roll spirit especially well. "Egg Sandwich" is an amusing song extollying th virtues of Bojangle's grub. "Paradigm Shifting" featuring the excellent trumpet playing by mike elam, is yet another highlight. this is a bright funky and varied album with a great sense of humor, and it's utterly infectious. |
