Artist description
"Most of the songs by this group are in a funky groove blues vein. The content and the lyrics are the most interesting things about them. Songs like "I Never Loved You Anyway" and "Social Lubrication" use smart lyrics and a unique perspective to convey an interesting take on different situations. Down By 4 definitely makes you think...this is a group that certainly seems to have the talent to do it right...McConnell and Richman form a very strong and grounded rhythm section. McConnell is especially adept at playing sharp and crisp, with just the right touch. Masashi is an interesting player in that he's very versatile with his assorted styles...Mattioli knows exactly who she is. Her vocals are expressive an emotional, sweet but hard, and it's a combination that she has a good handle on...she has an awareness that's tangible and an inviting accessibility, with moves that sell the songs well...Down By 4 has all the earmarks of being great." -Music Connection (Live Review) - January '98 |

Press Reviews
At their January 21st gig at Molly Malone's they took the tiny stage and laid into a powerful set thatfeatured the funk rock guitar style of Masashi, who you can tell has mastered his instrument. You canjust feel that this band has been playing together for a while. A great deal of credit must be given to DownBy 4's tall, gorgeous and skilled vocalist. Mattioli works magic with her lyrical melodies that for somereason fit memorably and perfectly with a head spinning 5/8 funky R&B bass groove underneath. Theirintricate and creative arrangements are pulled off flawlessly and with a confidence not found in younger, greener bands. It is such a relief to see musicians who are exploring songs, a rock band who has theability to deal with complexity and pull it off with palatable melodic grace. -Rock City:News"Most of the songs by this group are in a funky groove blues vein.
