Press Reviews
by Shawn Hammond, Daily Universe - I recently came across a groovy CD from a local band that really tears it up. In fact, after listening to Similar Opposition's latest album, "Follow," I'd have to say it is one of the best rock bands in the valley.Instrumentally, SO's pensive grunginess reminds me of Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Candlebox. However, to that equation the band adds bluesy Hendrix shades and an upbeat funky side that brings to mind Freddy Jones Band. One of the really cool things about these guys is that each member is very proficient on his instrument. Even cooler, each knows when to lay back and lock into the groove and when to let loose with an unabashed display of chops.Vocally, SO is also just as powerful. Boothe is confident, energetic and a little more melodic than the singers for the alterno-rock bands SO seems to be influenced by. It's a great combination.Overall, each song on "Follow" features engaging, diverse music that gets your foot tapping. But unlike some bands, it doesn't stop there. You also get great vocal performances that leave melodies dancing in your head long after you've hit stop on your CD player. I can't argue with that recipe. - Hammond is an experienced guitarist and regular contributor to Guitar Player magazine. |
