Artist description
A swirl of obvious and obscure music from a century of recorded pop. Dorky stories of growing up behind rainy windowpanes, girls who made out in rusty cars and a bit of hometown folklore for good measure. The live show is our three voices, bass, drums and 12-string guitar. The four and eight track machines capture us in alot of flight configurations. |

Musical Influences
We hid transistors under our heads when we were little, bought piles of records when income was disposable and played in a band. Just like anybody else. Music fills a place inside us that seems to always have room for something else. |

Folks mention artists ranging from the glory days of transistor pop in the '60s & '70s or college radio staples like Flying Nun and Elephant 6. We blush. |

Artist History
The Sauvie Island Moon Rocket Factory began as a lo-fi outlet for singer-songwriter David Klopfenstein in th' early 90s. It continued covertly through a number of projects until 1996 when Lincoln McGrath, came into the picture. A super-journeyman with a sixth sense for bass and vocal arrangements, Linc also provided an old four track and a great workspace in a warehouse. After playing some successful live shows, the duo gained a drummer, multi-instrumentalist Nathan Ruckman. No longer bound by the bedroom studio as a sole outlet, th' Factory has developed into a live power trio and a tape hungry recording project. The past few years have seen releases on compilations from A Bouncing Space, Best Kept Secret and multimedia from trnsnd.net. "Super 8 Soundtrack" & "Mudpuddle Park" & "Wy'east Can't Sleep" are all available from the Italian indie, Best Kept Secret. |

Press Reviews
Rob gave us a real boost with these first kind words... "Sauvie Island Moon Rocket Factory have put together a wonderfully dreamy cassette. It's nine songs are drenched in reverb, it's textures are nicely layered, and it all works beautifully. The opening song, 'Almost Ramona' has a Mazzy Star feel; with nice steel guitar and vocals traded by David and Linc. It makes me feel like I'm on a quiet beach at sunset. Elsewhere a trombone is utilized to interesting effect on the familiar, but not, 'Pedalnaut.' SUPER 8 SOUNDTRACK reminded me alot of Big Star's, SISTER LOVERS. I kept expecting to hear, 'Stroke it Noel'. My friend Melanie said it sounded 'old' which I think was a compliment." -- Rob Christensen, TapeOp Magazine, Summer 1999. - * - * - * - * - "It takes a certain bravado to release a 3-CD box set, especially when it's your first CD release. Matching Portland's inconsistent energy levels and manic-depressive mood swings, the band uses minimalist drumming and sharp-edged guitar chords to sketch a wide reaching audio mural of the city. In the same way that the Monkees' gleeful music easily framed Davy Jones aping around mid-'60s London, these songs evoke a blurry-eyed picture of a Mod, head tucked low against the gray and wet February, strolling down west Burnside. From the mournful harmonizing on WY'EAST CAN'T SLEEP to the giddy carnival of MUDPUDDLE PARK, the 3-CD set is an astute and wide-ranging soundtrack for Portland." -- Phil Busse, Portland Mercury, 2-15-2001. - * - * - * - * - "The kosmonauts from Sauvie Island issue a sharp challenge to slackers, bar-napkin planners and couch-bound underachievers everywhere. Since when does a relatively unheralded local indie band think it can debut its first label-sanctioned release with a motherloving triple-disc box set? The sheer damn nerve! Sauvie Island Moon Rocket Factory's 3*2*1 has the further sass to back up its audacity with better than solid homemade pop. Mostly slow and sad, these songs float in a haze of sweet guitars, shambling drums and garage echo. Even though most of the recordings are gritty four-track takes, a definite poise and polish informs the whole enterprise." -- Zach Dundas, Willamette Week, 2-22-2001. - * - * - * - * - The Church of Northwest Music on KBOO 90.7 is spinning our releases, SUPER 8 SOUNDTRACK at #10, MUDPUDDLE PARK at #8 and WY'EAST CAN'T SLEEP at #2 for April of 2001.
