Press Reviews
I realize the mere thought of a five-song, 35 minute CDep, not being long
enough, would throw the average Ten Yard Fight-junkie into a fit or frenzy.
But, after listening to "NASA," the debut offering from Ohio's Rebreather,
you're sure to be as speechless as I and not want the moment to end. In
all seriousness,
a ride into the world that Rebreather has created, is not only flawless,
but gives you a bitter taste of what heaven would be like if it were to exist.
Down-tuned guitars blazing and a melodic yet gruff vocal delivery that
legitimately gives Justin Broadrick of Godflesh fame a run for his money.
Yes, your eyes didn't just deceive you.
Godflesh is about the only band that captures a sludge moment as
illustriously as Rebreather does with "NASA." It's outstanding to see a new
band step up to the plate and knock one out for the home team.
The last time I was literally knocked on my ass over a band's debut of this
genre was back in the ISIS "Mosquito Control" era or perhaps even last
year's Knut
"Challenger" release. But, please don't think this is another Neurosis
clone tryin to capitalize on another band's success. This is definitely not
the case with Rebreather.
I only use this as reference, as the majority of those reading this
probably haven't heard some of sludge's finest; Cult of Luna, Knut or even
the mighty Godflesh. Like I said,
consider this a point of reference if not a major selling point.
So, my ranting is done? Sorry, you won't be getting off that easy, at least
for the time being. On to the music... the album opener,
appropriately titled "Earthmover" (as this is exactly what it does),
drops you even further into the pits of sludge hell and for a second, takes
your breath away.
At just over six minutes in length, "Earthmover" is the perfect definition
of what Rebreather is inside and out, melodic sludge that isn't afraid to
get dangerous and push the barriers of the genre to the extreme.
I like it and you will too. The second track, "Joy Bang," is the album's
most chaotic moment and is sure to be any Neurosis/ISIS fan's favorite. I
love how tame these guys are one second and how chaotic they are the next.
Mixing both clean and gruff vocals allows for a very powerful overall
experience.
This is highlighted on the band's premier track "Pushing the Lights," where
the band delves down a softer more melodic path with an all clean-vocal
approach.
It's very nice indeed. Think the softer side of Godflesh, especially the
track "Anthem" from their latest "Hymns" offering. "Inaudible" slows down
so you can try and catch a breath after having your ass handed to you for
over 15 minutes.
This track more than any reminds me of earlier Knut material. Their epic
(just shy of 14 minutes) closing track is perfectly executed in all aspects
of the songwriting. When it's over, you hardly notice that almost 14
minutes have elapsed.
Bottom Line: "NASA" takes off like no other has in years.
They step out of the gates and go right for the gold, winning without even
breaking a sweat. Rebreather deserves your immediate attention and all the
praise they are soon to receive, after creating an album of such epic
proportions.
This is definitely one of the highlights of 2002 ranking up there with
seeing Integrity live earlier in the year. I'm actually at a loss for words
here. Any Neurosis, ISIS, Godflesh fan will find their new favorite band is
Rebreather.
My best advice is - buy this record asap - and make sure everyone you've
ever known hears it.
It is that good.
As far as I'm concerned, this is the Album of the Year.
