    Artist description
Orchestral and jazz composer. What's the old saying, "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that thing." Or something like that. I am fascinated by the possibilities of orchestras and jazz ensembles, and combinations of them. I write in a variety of styles from baroque to experimental jazz, using traditional and exotic instruments like Japanese Koto, Sicu, Indian Sitar (had some lessons in Benares and Kathmandu), and a wide range of percussion instruments from around the world.

    Artist History
I started composing and performing during the 1960's while living in Bangkok, Thailand. I'm self-taught and have had works performed around the world on radio and television. As a member of the band Big Lost Rainbow in the 70's (Gear Fab Records), I played bass and electric guitar, and since then have written for film, television, and personal expression. I like to explore combinations of instruments in styles ranging from tradtional string trio to "I don't know what to call that" experimental music, but I'm always working with the basic elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and color. The Dragon In Love is my first large scale orchestral work. Shiva Inflagrante explores the sordid and sublime with jazz ensembles in traditional and experimental styles. I also write fiction and poetry. My first novel, Thai Heaven is available at www.geocities.com/bailhe.

    Press Reviews
“Written for extended orchestra and mixed chorus, this magnificent new work tells the story of a Dragon struggling with his love of a mortal. Stunning melodic and harmonic writing for chorus and orchestra featuring oboe, bass clarinet, clarinet, cello, piano, and horn is emotionally stirring and spiritually profound. Exotic sounds and textures from the Koto (a Japanese stringed instrument), Sicu (large Japanese wood flute), and exotic percussion lead down mystical paths. The sweetness of the voices and harmonies in the chorus will draw tears. Not since Samuel Barber or Aaron Copeland’s early work, has an American composer achieved such a brilliant combination of memorable melody and fascinating orchestral writing. This is the first orchestral composition I’ve heard in years that is certain to grow in stature and importance in the years to come. A truly great work” J. Hayden
