Los Angeles Times- Their backgrounds may be about as different as one may find in the music business, and their journey to the brink of recording stardom may one day be material for a Hollywood movie. But one thing is for certain about The Freaks. They're not your typical Los Angeles garage band waiting for their shooting star, and their mission comes across loud and clear with every show, every interview, and every song. And that is to rekindle all that is grand about the lost art form of Rock and Roll. It is that drive, that passion for making meaningful music which connects the band with its audience, that motivates lead singer George Henry Cunnington III, 20, of Studio City, lead guitarist/vocalist Joey Gabra, 22, of Los Angeles, bassist/vocalist Zareh Aghajanian, 24, of Tehran, Iran, rhythm guitarist Mike Bedrossian, 21, of Hollywood, and drummer Travis Chatham, 22, of La Canada. "Our music means something, it's about our lives and our experiences, and people can relate to it," says Cunnington III. "We want to bring back rock and roll. It's dead and we want to bring it back."The Freaks came together almost entirely by chance, as the notion of a band was first formed by Gabra in late 1997. Together with former drummer Kelly Kusomoto, the two landed their first break in Glendale's Stage Left Coffee House, where regular weekly jam sessions eventually caught the eye of Cunnington III, who worked at the establishment as a counterperson.Several more jam sessions later, Cunnington III was on board as the band's frontman, bringing with him songs and material reflecting a classic rock influence with a mellow mood. About the same time, future bassist Aghajanian placed an ad over the internet seeking a band, and as luck would have it, Gabra, in the market for a bassist for a side project he was involved with, came across the ad. Gabra brought Aghajanian on board, and discovered soon thereafter that the two actually shared a common bond - graduation from Crescenta Valley High School. When an opening in The Freaks became available, Gabra already had his man, and Aghajanian made the crossover. Now in need of a rhythm guitarist, chance struck again, as Kusomoto introduced the band to co-worker Bedrossian, who was the final piece of the proverbial puzzle. With a side project involving Gabra and Aghajanian out of the way, the quintet hit the recording studio, and released its first demo EP - a six song self-titled collection - in early 1998. During the next twelve months, The Freaks mounted a tireless campaign to get the word out on their unique style of rock and roll, playing such famous Los Angeles-area venues as The Roxy, The Whiskey-A-Go-Go, the Barnsdall Theater, the Reseda Country Club, the Dragonfly, the Martini Lounge, the Troubadour, the Loft, The Coconut Teazer, The Garage, The Malibu Inn, Jack's Sugar Shack, and an appearance at the Summer Solstice Festival. The Freaks released their second album in Nov. of 1999, a full-length offering featuring ten tracks appearing on its own label, GAME records, entitled, "Sex on the 2nd Floor." The rollercoaster ride was not over, however, as on Super Bowl Sunday, January 26, 2000, Kusomoto left the band to tend to personal problems, leaving the now-quartet in need of a drummer. One week later, Chatham, a lifelong friend of Gabra, joined The Freaks, and the journey was again afoot. With musical influences ranging from The Foo Fighters, Guns 'N Roses, Creed, Motley Crue and Yes, to the Marvelous 3, Fountains of Wayne, Rage Against the Machine, STP and Pearl Jam, The Freaks take pride in offering up music that is real, that is original, and that can connect with the audience. "We spend every day doing something for the band," says Gabra. "This group of guys are very committed, and we play from the heart. "Our music is liked because the audience can relate to it. It's really for everybody." A universal appeal and wide marketability are what definitely set The Freaks apart from the competition, and the band's enthusiasm towards its music and its mission is seen in no better place than on the live stage. "We're five guys from different worlds, but we put on state-of-the-art rock and roll shows," Aghajanian says. "Our music is personal, it's about us. The audience gets to know us better through our music." Having performed with such bands as Zebrahead, Lit, Wank, Evenrude, Hoobustank, Apex Theory, Vent and The Fine Machines, The Freaks have put together a solid resume of appearances and live events that has put them on the doorstep of the big time. As for the band's name, Gabra says The Freaks was simply a good way to describe the group's musical style early on, full of energy, life, and creativity. With such tracks as "Don't Wait Up," "Detached," "Wash Away," and the band's first single, "Caught Red Handed," whose video was just recently shot in Los Angeles, The Freaks are ready to take the recording world by storm. And their goals for the future? "We don't want to be one-hit wonders, that's for sure," says Gabra. "We want to be around for a while, and continue making good music."
