Album of the Month - Vanguard Magazine (UK) (Nov/1999)New stars are about to arise from the north! That's the prediction following a few listens to AtriboMacaca's new release of Latin influences on their debut album Xegando. Hailing from such countries as Brazil and Portugal but forged in the world renowned rich Latin musical pastures of Dewsbury, Leeds and Sheffield (widely revered as the Latin American capital of Yorkshire) Atribo Macaca's first album release Xegando is certainly something worth taking note of for those with an eye on this kind of music. The album provides tunes from a variety of different genres: Salsa, Bossanova, Funk and Samba to name but a few. Each one composed and performed with aplomb. The opening track, Saudade is a wistful salsa tune laced with a twinkling acoustic guitar riff and coloured by the melancholic lyrics of miguel migueiZ. The second tune, Passito is a pleasant bossanova track which sounds suspiciously ripped off from something else, but doesn't every bossanova tune sound ripped off? Head noddingly congenial nevertheless. Ayo the third track on the album features the kind of funky bass line that could induce a party. migueiZ's English chorus of 'Everybody's Dancing! Everybody's Dancing' reminds one of French rap, but this only adds to the smile that this song forces on your face. The next tune Samba da Macaca is what the title suggests an intoxicating and chaotic samba rhythm, ideal for those many carnivals that are held in and around Sheffield in the November period. This track could have done with a little more production work as it seems to take a break half-way in between, allowing for percussionist claudio kron de BRAZIL to introduce individually the very many members of his percussion family: 'and here's Mr.Twangy thing'. The next tune Mundo is back to the salsa theme, but this is much more of a smoochy, romantically inclined number with migueiZ the seducer lacing his smooth lyrical coquetry all over the track. Again a really laid back and star twinkling number. Sophisticated samba. The last track could never be a commercial success in the UK with a name like Xegarei but from the moment it leaves the starting blocks you're enamoured by the delicate but relentless guitar riffs, the samba beats in the background and migueiZ' languid tones. Sunshine. Xegando is more like a compilation than an album that you could slot into a section at Virgin Records. However as evidence of the bands diversity and skills it serves it's purpose. There's no doubt that this is quality music and for a tenner it's well worth a purchase if you're into this kind of Latin music or you ever wanted something which could give you a flavour of the variety that abounds.
